Why is this ranked so high?

OK, not trolling, but just watched this film and then check here to see it has an 8.3 rating. I thought is was boring and the story was not very interesting. My 5 year old lasted for about 40 minutes, and she usually watches movies all the way through. Had heard good things, but not really sure what they are. Was average at best. Started slowly with the whole becoming elderly and alone and then the kid showed up and then it really dragged. I thought the only interesting thing was the talking dogs, where most posters seem to find that ridiculous. Of all the things in here, that was the only part I'd say I liked.

Would have been better if Carl helped clear Muntz's name and they go back together, triumphantally, with the kid, the house, the bird, and Muntz. Forget Muntz is about 125 years old. Would have left a nice plot story for a sequal, where the kid grows up and continues the explorer ways established inspired by Muntz.

I enjoy most Pixar films, but this won't be watched again by me anyway.

Why? Simply because it's a bloody good movie.

reply

Because it is a masterpiece. It has everything a god film should have

reply

You liked Muntz?? Muntz and his illiterate slave society? Really?

It didn't bother you that he murdered a dozen other explorers and tried to kill a little boy?

reply

im glad i dont know you, you sound like a joyless turd.

"Dessrves got nothing to do with it".

If you aren't in tears 10 minutes into this movie then you are a heartless freak.

Know any other movie at all that can do that to most grown adults?

The whole point of movies is to make you feel something. This one has that in spades.

reply

Yes, I do, "The Plague Dogs"! The ending of that movie makes the first 15 mins of "Up", the death of Bambi's Mum, the "Baby Mine" scene from "Dumbo", and the killing of Old Yeller… combined, seem like a jolly joyful day in the lollipop park with the Care Bears by comparison!

How about you browse through some of the critic reviews on rottentomatoes? Up got 98%,which is I think the best rating I have ever seen...if you didn't enjoy it then we'll I'm afraid you don't understand what makes this film special, and never will...at least you can read critics try to explain why it's so great...and they are usually more eloquent than the average imdb user.

Your five year old usually watches movies all the way through?
Do you drug her? PLEASE!! tell me your secret lol!

What's so difficult about that? What movies are you trying to get your kid to watch, exactly - Drive? Because that would be challenging even for adults to bare through all the way.

Anyway, bad jokes aside, what is so strange about what the OP said? I don't know whether or not he/she was exaggerating for effect, but when I was a kid I would watch stuff all day long, as long as it was interesting, and not profoundly creepy.

reply

lol.
I dont think theres anything really wrong with the Op said, I just think a lot of parents would empathise with the fact that not many 5 year olds sit content though a movie at the theater, unless its Barney's Xmas or The Wiggles movie. (60-70 minutes tops)
Dont get me wrong, Im sure "some" kids may sit, but by the last half hour they'd be under duress!
The simple fact is "most" (of coarse there are exceptions) 5 year olds wouldn't even gather the most basic plot elements of a movie like "Up". Sure they'd laugh at "scenes", snippets etc, but in general, a movie like this isn't really meant for a 5 year old to understand. Im not saying a 5 year cant watch it, but understand it? Not improbable, but unlikely.

My 23 mos old son love this movie and watches it from start to finish atleast 3 x a day, he's memorized the lines already, when one character screams or grunts or coughs or laughs he's atleast a second ahead of the scene.

We love it, and english isn't even our first language. I loved the fact that in the end Carl has gained a "child" (which was his and Ellie's "dream") while Russel has somebody there for him in lieu of his absentee father.

At first I also felt sorry for Muntz because he was accused of lying and he has devoted most of his life to clearing his name, but when he threatened Carl with all those "scientists/botanists/researchers" helmets saying they all encountered accidents, then it occurred to me that Muntz would do anything to clear his name and get the bird irregardless if it meant killing or harming others. The bird is most definitely exotic and endangered and bringing it out of its habitat and leaving its offspring to die without its mother isn't really a "happy ending".

Aside from moving on from death and being brave and learning to open up despite of being hurt that maybe made the movie a bit gloomy for you, the movie is hilarious! I also love Dug's loyalty and love for Carl - "I just met you but I love you"
Russel's determination, bravery and how he stands up for what is right (even at that very young age)
I can go on and on and explain all the scenes that I love -- which stiched together makes an absolute masterpiece
But most of all I really love and applaud the musical score. That short melody that is repeated in the entire movie, paced very fast for happy and exciting/triumphant moments, paced so-so for okay moments and paced really slow for sad moments! It was 100% genius!

I have to admit that I completely agree with the OP in my suprise that others have ranked this so highly.

Yeah I am a 31 yr old guy, BUT I LOVE the vast majority of the childrens animated films. The fact that users have ranked this above Toy Story 1+2, the first two Shreks and the Incredibles is completely ridiculous.

I did find UP to be visually stunning, however beyond that, afted the first 10 mins is where my enjoyment of this film started to wane. There was very little storyline for the first half of the film, I found the characters poor and lazily designed tbh. I liked the old guy who was devastated over loosing his wife and companion, however the little kid was annoying, as was that stupid bird. And the friendly retreiver amongst all the other dogs bred for guarding/fighting duties was completely ridiculous. So poor characters and storyline led to me finding it hard to be properly absorbed into the film, however I wouldn't go as far as to call it boring.

As I watched it alone, maybe there are some/plenty of jokes that the youngsters enjoyed. But there is nothing ther for the adults, I smiled at a few things, maybe even giggled once or twice but UP is lacking in proper laughs, and proper laughs in my opinion should be prevalent in these type of animations.

Decent effort that I gave 6/10, but there are FAR better movies of this type.
Of course if u want to look at the rankings, then ONLY use them as a GUIDE, yeah everything is subjective and not everyone will agree, but for UP to be ranked higher than the original Toy Story is just foolish, farcical and absurd!!
