Why is this ranked so high?

OK, not trolling, but just watched this film and then check here to see it has an 8.3 rating. I thought is was boring and the story was not very interesting. My 5 year old lasted for about 40 minutes, and she usually watches movies all the way through. Had heard good things, but not really sure what they are. Was average at best. Started slowly with the whole becoming elderly and alone and then the kid showed up and then it really dragged. I thought the only interesting thing was the talking dogs, where most posters seem to find that ridiculous. Of all the things in here, that was the only part I'd say I liked.

Would have been better if Carl helped clear Muntz's name and they go back together, triumphantally, with the kid, the house, the bird, and Muntz. Forget Muntz is about 125 years old. Would have left a nice plot story for a sequal, where the kid grows up and continues the explorer ways established inspired by Muntz.

I enjoy most Pixar films, but this won't be watched again by me anyway.

In terms of a star rating on IMDb or in terms of the Pixar filmography? Either way...

The movie has a great opening scene, using very few words, and mostly by visual means conveying the entire life story between Carl and Ellie. From there, we have the plot of somebody wanting to fulfill their loved one's dream, which has been done before, but it's done in a new and original way (have you ever seen an airborne house lifted by balloons, maneuvered in the sky like a sailboat?) that is fun to watch as long as suspend disbelief, of course. Good characters, good character development in Carl, nice bittersweet moments involving him finally letting go of the past balanced out with some funny moments (the alpha dog with the chipmunk voice and Russell slowly rubbing along the blimp window in particular), and typically great animation by Pixar make this one deserving of such high ratings in my opinion. Though it just barely misses out in my top five Pixar films, this says more about the supreme quality of those films than any shortcomings in this one.

Agreed, I completely agree. Top 250 is a hell of a mess. And btw, I'd watch Cars 2 again other than Up.

Because it has balloons tied to its score.

But seriously, it isn't ranked that high. I guess maybe it might have been in 2010 when this was posted, but not today. But I really can't think of a Pixar movie that took more chances than Up and landed absolutely right on the money. It is an adventure film starring an elderly man and a kid. Just hearing that as a concept, you'd think that be a bottom 100 movie. Most would struggle to make that idea just average. The emotional scenes connect with audiences and are the most talked about aspect of this movie, but even on the action scenes alone, which you have a house lifted in flight with store-bought balloons against a giant old-school zeppelin with dogs in biplanes flying around... that anyone could say this movie is derivative of anything, or unoriginal, I mean lol. OK I guess.

Also responding more to the OP, I don't really think after Muntz clearly attempts to murder a child, injures animals and attempts to broadsword his biggest fan, like you can step back into a happy ending for his character after that lol. You'd have to change pretty much the entire third act to build to some sort of happy ending like that. Which maybe it would have worked, but I think it would have played against the theme of the movie, which was mostly about the weight of nostalgia and how sometimes its best to let things go. Sometimes your childhood heroes turn out to be insane sociopaths. It happens. Growth is when you recognize this and drop them as heroes - out of your sinking house if you have to haha. Also I really liked how this movie had a pretty clear cut villain and not some misunderstood monster type in need of therapy or whatever.
