Scarier than [REC]?

Just wondering if anyone has seen any movies scarier than REC. I loved this film and thought it was one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, especially one of the scariest. Anyone have any recommendations for other equally terrifying films?

reply

At the moment I have to give [REC] the gold medal of honor for being the scariest movie I have seen. Quarantine does a couple of scenes better but the ending in [REC] is enough to outdo it as a whole. Here are a handful of other (recent) scary ass movies I can rattle off at the top of my head.

Plague Town
The Descent
Frontier(s)
Martyrs
Inside
Ils (Them)
Neighborhood Watch (aka Deadly End)
Splinter
28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later

I'm sure there are more...I'll head back to this thread.

As far as scariness goes, nope. I will NEVER be able to watch the last 10 minutes of this movie ever again. The first 80% was pretty good though. Martyrs is the most disturbing movie I've ever seen though. (although I've (seriously) never been able to re-watch the scene in the Ring where the chic climbs out of the TV. I thought I was going to die!! And I know I quit breathing for a few seconds. But I think REC was scarrier now) That's my opinion anyway :).

What is so scary about REC? I had to turn it off after 50 minutes because it was so bad. The camera gimmick was annoying, and so were all the characters. Ohhh.... cute little girl, she looks like a zombie but I better get REAL close and get bitten. OH FEAR..... SO SCARY..... how are we going to get out of here!!! We better film all the scary infected trying to kill us, uhhh..... hmmmmm.... I dont get the stupidity. This movie is a crap version of The Blair Witch Project IMO.

Creep....
that film terrified me... but then again I watched it alone... at night when i was 12...
but in more recent years REC is one of the few films to scare me.. even on DVD..
Ill get plenty scared when watching something in the cinema on the big screen.. but not as much on dvd/tv

Come and get it, bitches.

For me to get a good scare the movie needs to have characters behaiving believable.

The Ring and The Descent gave me some good scares, while Eden Lake was pretty intense! Dawn of the Dead '04 had its moments too, that scared my gf. I cannot wait to watch "Paranormal Activity", looks like a documentary style horror movie done right without the shaky cam flying around and being dropped every five minutes, but who know if it will be any good? :-S

i found the descent quite scary.
and of course the blair witch project, which i saw before everyone was talking about it. I didn't know more than that is was a documentary. so was quite surprised (and shocked) when i noticed what was all happening in the movie.
the ring was quite scary too.
oh and Shutter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0440803/)!

How'd you see Blair Witch before everyone was talking about it? I remember when that movie was released it was being talked about by reporters and such who'd seen pre-releases and touted it as the most terrifying movie of all time and so on before the movie itself was ever released. I saw it opening weekend in the theater and it was lined out the door with people.

Blair Witch? lol

Indeed...but then my theatre being lined out the door wasn't all that surprising, that flick pulled in MILLIONS...theaters were being sold out prior to it ever actually being released.

I thought The Descent (already mentioned) and The Strangers were very scary and suspenseful films. I know The Strangers has its faults, but we can save that for The Strangers board, can't we? lol

Pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space 'cos its bugger all down here on Earth.

Different people, different views, different levels of perception as far as fear on the screen is concerned. It's a genre like any other, addressing specifically to sensitivity of the audience. Some may faint, some may laugh and walk out, some may stay till the end...

But [REC] was good, no doubt about it. Definitely not a film for the faint-hearted as this one is a real jolting audio and visual rollercoaster-like experience.

reply

Well... I have been pretty scared by Event Horizon, for example. Basically it's a haunted house story where the haunted house is a space ship.
Movies like 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead (the remake) have scary moments but they are more action-oriented.

[REC] was definitely one of the scariest movies I've seen. I still think The Shinning was scarier though. Some of those scenes still give me nightmares!

Shining was scary, but REC is way scarier

I am not a big fan of the horror genre, especially, the zombie movie formula.

The whole idea of a virus/disease turning humans into mindless-powerful-cannibals is ridiculous and absurd. I just cannot get into these types of movies.

When a person comes down with a virus or disease, the last thing you want to do is go chowing on another human. Sick people tend to not have an appetite and physical strength is diminished, sick people mostly just want rest and sleep and visit the toilet a few times and find a remedy to get over the illness.

The P.O.V. camera work I find somewhat interesting and does add some suspense and tension.

I find movies such as Silence of the Lambs or The Exorcist much more disturbing.

Or even better yet, I would rather play a video game like Resident Evil 4, System Shock 2, F.E.A.R. or Half-Life. I found many more thrills, freights and get the adrenaline going moments in classic gaming goodness than absurd horror movies.

reply

Yes, but those sort of viruses or diseases are just physiological, not mental or behavioural. Regular sickness does diminish appetite and physical strength, however some illnesses result in a decreased mental state, which may lead to loss of personality, language and memory. Illnesses that affect behaviour may cause the person's appetite to increase and change (meaning that they may want to eat humans). Rabies is a good example of this. In [rec]'s case, the disease is caused by a demonic possession, which would definitely cause all this.
