Scarier than [REC]?

Just wondering if anyone has seen any movies scarier than REC. I loved this film and thought it was one of the best horror movies I've ever seen, especially one of the scariest. Anyone have any recommendations for other equally terrifying films?

reply

Hmmmm, been racking my brains and I honestly think that [REC] is by far the most terrifying and intense movie I have ever seen.

Prior to [REC] I thought Ringu was extremely creepy, especially the infamous last scene with Sadako and also Shutter (Thailand) gave me the chills but neither on the scale of [REC]

I think the reason why REC is just so damn scary, is how it effortlessly combines loud brutal jolts that make you jump out of your skin with a creepy and claustrophobic feel that gives you the goosebumps! :)

Sorry, no idea. And tell you what: if I knew of a scarier movie than REC, I probably wouldn't watch it, or would ONLY watch it with my friends, copiously chatting with them all the time, with plenty of snacks and drinks.

REC was so good because it managed to get into the reality sphere. For example, Evil Dead, while somewhat scary, makes it very clear that it's all BS, from start to finish. REC, however, is very insidious in that it makes a cinematic story into a documentary. In REC, the line between reality and fiction was masterfully blurred.

um.....

I didn't really think rec was that scary to be honest. I guess the whole found footage subgenre is running on fumes for me by now.

One of the scarier movies I've seen recently is the poughkeepsie tapes, coincidentally directed by the guy who remade rec.

rec 2 looks pretty cool however

thanks for the warning, don't think I'm going to see either :)

Finally you think so to!
Poughkeepsie Tapes was Psychologically terrifying, and im not easily scared.

Exorcist? I still rate that the most terrifying.

They mostly come at night... Mostly.

______________

You are RIGHT on the money about The Exorcist...scariest movie ever, hands down.

I have to check out the Poughkeepsie Tapes....never heard of this movie!

See, that's how horror (or any other genre) varies from person to person. For [Rec], I thought it was a great, well made, intense movie. Was it scary? To me, not until the last few minutes in the final room. Probably not even in my top ten for scary, but I do love the movie. It's one of my favorite horror movies.

Poughkeepsie Tapes, I hated (and I'm a found footage fan). The first thing was the corny music playing during the recordings (did he carry around a stereo and hit play now and then?). The second thing was, while I appreciate they went for authenticity with the recordings, it was way too grainy for me to enjoy. Realistically his cell phone could have taken a better video (I think it's based in the 2000's). I did enjoy the story of it, even though I never finished the movie and ended up reading what happened. But the filming was kinda annoying to watch to me.

There aren't any. I'd like to think about any South-Korean or Japanese horror film could do, and some are just sub-par with [Rec], but non above it.

I'm just about to start watching REC., because I've heard it's supposed to be scary as all hell. I'm a huge fan of The Mist, which I think is an extremely underrated and truly terrifying film. I haven't gotten into the foreign horror movie scene quite yet, so REC. is gonna be a little test for me. Horror is my favorite genre, though, and I've seen all the classics and most of the newer movies and nothing has disturbed and horrified me like The Mist did. It's worth watching, easily the best Stephen King adaptation since the original Shining in 1980.

what did you think??

reply

To be honest I haven't watched many horror movies, but I really enjoyed The Mist. I haven't seen REC yet...how would you rate it compared to The Mist? Just been reading some of the other threads on REC and by the sounds of things it would be a lot scarier.

[REC] was good, but it's not the scariest movie I've seen.

Ringu chilled me like no other movie. And Ju-on was pretty scary as well. I once had a marathon of the 3 Ring movies (Japanese), the three Ju on movies, and Dark Water (original). That was a pretty terrifying marathon. Closest I've come to jumping at shadows.

Outside of those movies, Martyrs was haunting. Most of that was because the acting was so good, and the violence was so real. Easily one of the hardest movies to watch.

Funny Games was really sinister and unnerving. The movie itself wasn't really "scary", in the sense that I wasn't jumping out of my skin, but the actions of the villains were unsettling.

Why did the moron beat his head against the wall?...because it felt so good when he stopped.

I thought 'inside' was the scariest movie I've ever seen . [rec] was pretty Fricker. Scary though! 2007 was a very good year for foreign horror!

The original Salem's Lot is scary...so is Funny Games (for different reasons, as someone alredy pointed out).
