Lead guy is just awful

Just watched this and the lead guy is one horrible actor, with his whiney gary shandling like voice, and woody allen wannabe acting.I hope he was playing the role of a whiney, nerdy, smart alec jewish kid, because if he wasn't,I hope he has a second string to his fiddle.

His voice is pretty grating.
Strangely, I got used to it in How to Train your Dragon, but here it was...kinda annoying.

i agree, his voice was pretty painful to hear, but otherwise he was playing a character, and I love characters. I see too few in hollywood and too many models trading on textbook emotions and studies in humanistic behavior.

If it's more inspiring to watch a PRETTY face deliver the same lines in a SEXY way and it means more to you, then congratulations, your as shallow as the rest of modern pop-culture. If instead you can look at Dave's character in amusement and sympathy, you are thinking less vicariously and on a deeper level.

You might not like him, but he has a lot of fans. He is an amazing actor and plays his roles perfectly. He plays to what you think he is, which is why he does it so well. This movie would not have worked with a jesse eisenberg. He is too "look at me, I'm awkward, but not really, lol"...If you have followed his career since before popular mechanics for kids like I have, you would realize that he is just playing his stereotype. He is great at it and does it well.

I also can't believe that people are saying they couldn't enjoy teresa palmers performance because of him. She had really no performance, she is the typical, sort of hot and into more than just looks character. The typical female character. She wasn't bad in this movie, nor was she good.

This is my signature, not a part of my post

i guess all these idiots in this thread who are bashing him because of his geeky performence really have no idea how the movie business works...ACTORS PLAY THE CHARACTER THE WAY THE DIRECTOR TELLS HIM TOO, that is how it works...if you thought his performence didnt work for your taste, well you can blame the director who told him to act like that

Completely agree. I'm not sure how this guy got a few big roles... but I haven't seen him in a film in a couple years so hopefully he had a short career.

Just watching this one now on TV and got to say, I got nothing against the actor, but the way he portrayed the character was definitely annoying. I wish he could have tried another approach to the character.

Part of the problem may be that the film was trying to mix comedy with drama. In the first half (up to the bathroom scene), we get mostly comedy. After that, things turn a lot more serious, so a comedic approach wouldn't work well for those scenes. The mop scene sums it all up: first half comedy, second half drama.

Also in agreement with the O.P. The lead actor makes the film unwatchable.

Chalk another one up for Hollywood's ethnic nepotism giving people careers who don't deserve them.

I wanted to pinch his head off. UGH!

*The Manitou is in and will take your calls now.

I agree. I can't believe I sat through that/this movie, maybe because of Miss Palmer.

I felt like Beavies/Butthead watching a Bryan Adams, Sting(?) and Rod Stewart Music Video.

"Haha!" - Nelson Muntz ... pointing at you. :)

I found his voice irritating as well. I like Nicolas Cage but the apprentice Dave had such a whiny grating voice. The stutter was bit annoying but I could accept that.

Dave just didn't have the charisma for a lead and combined with Nicolas Cage it made a film with an alarmingly high amount of quirkiness.

I found the worst part about the romance between Becky and Dave is the fact that it makes guys like believe that no matter how weird they are they should be able to get the hot chick. Movies tend to be in a guy's favour showing douchebag guys living in their mom's basement getting the popular pretty girl.
