Just watched this and the lead guy is one horrible actor, with his whiney gary shandling like voice, and woody allen wannabe acting.I hope he was playing the role of a whiney, nerdy, smart alec jewish kid, because if he wasn't,I hope he has a second string to his fiddle.
I didn't care for the casting for the role of David (grown up David anyway).
He was a cross between French Stewart and Christian Slater.
That's the most perfect description ever. I had thought of the Christian Slater part of it (during one scene I was turned away from my TV and Jay spoke and I was thinking 'when did Christian Slater appear in this movie?').
I do think that this movie would have been better and done better at the box office with a different young man in the role of David.

I know just the scene that you speak of - it's the one where he has retrieved the girl's purse and bracelet from the would-be thief, and they are on the platform. What a dick, so lame to copy another actor's facial expressions AND their vocal delivery.
Hadn't thought of French Stewart, but now that so done mentioned it, whenever he wasn't doing Slater he was doing Stewart.
Hollywood - it's not about talent. It's all about connections. I wonder whose desk he or his folks were under to get him this role.
Did anyone see him in "Tropic Thunder?" He played the role perfectly for that character, really funny.
Remember that actors play their roles the way the director tells them to. If the director wanted him to play it less nerdy and geeky, then he would have.
Same. I really like Jay Baruchel actually, but every time I come to IMDB there always seem to be more people slating him. And I thought he was good as Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon.
I have to agree...went way too far. I could barely make it through the film because Baruchel's voice and mannerisms were so irritating, and add to it the cliche of a pretty girl falling for him in the end was too much. All I could think of was how much he reminded me of Jerry Lewis. I absolutely could not enjoy the film since I expected the lead character at any moment to break out into "The Patsy" schtick.

Ha ha yes you nailed it! I don't mind geeky but cute leads but this guy with his Waterboy voice was just annoying.
Hollywood seems a bit short on these recently for their young action films (Jesse Eisenberg being the only guy I can think of and actually he's about 30, so probably too old now too!). We need more like Matthew Broderick, John Cusack, Justin Long

does he suck or is it just your opinion that he sucks? if he sucked so bad he wouldn't be a successful actor. I thought he did a good job but again thats my opinion.
This Kid romancing Teresa Palmer was more than I could take. What was the Director thinking?? The movie was really trite, but this kid made it unbearable. JAY...please stick to Voice Overs. You being cast for the lead role in this movie may be the worst casting decision in the "History of Cinema". It's not your fault however. If I were in your shoes, I would have accepted the role as well....a paycheck..why not. It's the Director here who will have to deal with his casting decisions and the loss of revenues from it. I was looking forward to seeing this flick because I liked a few of Turtletaub's previous works; and Cage, teamed up with the talented little Fox Teresa Palmer, along with the subject matter, sounded like it might be an interesting project. I'm still scratching my head trying to understand how Turtletaub spends $150,000,000 and comes up with this garbage.
