It didn't kill his career at all, he waked away from Hollywood in disgust after all the interference in the movie from the studio, and vowed never to work for an American studio again.
shareI did hear about a lot of interference but then again some of the news was he was coming out with crazy ideas of how he wanted the movie to go even going way over budget.
Unless he comes out and gives us his side and we also get to hear from others that was present we wont know the truth.
This movie did have before even going into production a lot of rewrites I even remember a few directors leaving the project.
I never understood why this movie was such an issue the other film does have a high bench mark in which it deserves with that it laid out a lot of the path for this film it is a case of filling in some blanks not answering everything which might of opened it up for another film.
He made a feature length film in 2020. So his career isn't completely done.
Also people need to realize how much meddling goes on in Hollywood even to 'legends'. Many of Wes Cravens films had major studio interference, Cursed (2005) in particular is a ridiculous example of studio meddling, what happened to that film is a disgrace. A complete clusterfuck.
I believe John Carpenter has stated this is one of the reasons he no longer directs, he can't be bothered with all the Hollywood politics and studio interference.
Matthijs did a decent job on this film, but it's understandable how frustrated he would be with the studio dictating what he can and can't do. I know the director of Black Christmas (2006) outright disowned that film and hates Weinsteins guts for the sheer dictation he had to follow to appease him. These things happen unfortunately.
Directors often get a bad wrap and a lot of the blame but it's often the studio who cause the issues.
