Killed the director's career...
Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. doesn't seem to have done anything since this film.

shareUniversal removed John Carpenter as director of Firestarter (1984) and severed ties with him after his critically panned box office flop 'The Thing (1982)'.
shareThat might have been lucky for Carpenter. Firestarter was a stinker and I don't know if Carpenter could have made it any better. Instead he got to direct Christine and Starman, so I think it turned out just fine for him.
shareSure, I agree. Carpenter made many good movies post-The Thing.
I'm just taking shots back at these idiots who think a movie performing poorly and effecting the directors career is some sort of 'gotcha'. Shit happens. It's a tough business and the 2011 prequel flopping and damaging the directors career doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
If we're judging movies by box office success, critic reviews and how it effects the directors career then The Thing (1982) is awful.
