Why do people consider Walt a villain?

Much like Michael Corleone, Walt does what he must in order to survive and protect his family.

To those who condemn Walt and Michael, what would you have done in exactly the same circumstances?

reply

Ugh! He’s not the “villain”, he’s the protagonist. He’s the center of the story ...an audience watches to follow Walter White. You might “hate” him, but he’s the reason you’re watching ...and care.

reply

Indeed. It’s telling that those who condemn him never say what they would do in the same circumstances.

reply

Michael Corleon repeatedly tried to get out, while Walt stayed in the game despite numerous opportunities to make a happily ever after exit and passed on them because he enjoyed what he was doing.

What would you have done in exactly the same circumstances?

reply

Not cook Meth for one.

But for the sake, lets say your already in it. How about not be so smug to hank that you taunt him into continuing the investigation.
Or don't leave evidence around the house like some serial killer keeping trophies.
Or when he could sold those train chemicals for millions and walked away.

I'm sure there's much more, but it's been a while since I watched the series.

reply

If you don’t cook meth then you can’t pay for your cancer treatment nor leave a nest egg for your family, which was Walt’s goal. So would you have just died and left your family nothing?

reply

Fuck no i'm not cooking Meth! That plan would have a slim chance of actually making my family better off, but the potential of it blowing up in your face(no pun intended) is massive.

What he did to his family in the end left them far more broken than if he just withered away from cancer.

reply

Did the show not demonstrate to us how that backfired though? Plus in the end he revealed he didn't even do it for his family, but because he liked it. You act like he had no other options, but he could've taken his friend up on his offer of joining the company they started together. He chose a life of crime despite having other options.

My family would rather be left with nothing when I die than have ill gotten gains and blood money. While medical treatment is never cheap, you can always apply for financial assistance to get it taken care of and if you don't make enough money, the debt collectors can't even garnish your wages anyway . On top of that, life insurance is relatively cheap. He could've got a policy that would've supported his family after his passing for at least a little while. Walt had all the support he needed, but he had too much pride which isn't a good trait.

reply

I would have taken the job at Gray Matters. Black was offering to cover the full treatment and pay a generous salary.

That would have been enough to cover medical expenses and leave the family in decent shape.

Would they have difficulties after he died? Sure. But Skylar could get a job as an accountant, Walt jr. would finish school and either get a job or go to college (probably with student loans). They’ve would’ve had Hank and Marie to help them out.

All of that would’ve been better than the disasterous state Walt left them at before he died.
