What is there to like about this movie?

Let me begin by saying I have a right to my opinion just as much as you, so please save the "you must have just not understood it" and "why don't you go watch ____" comments.

I don't understand why this movie has such a high rating (85% on Rotten Tomatoes) and gets so much praise on these boards. Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't see the appeal.

The only good thing I can say about this film is that the cinematography is pretty good and the music was well-done. Literally everything else this movie had to offer fell flat.

The acting performances ranged from comically bad to completely phoned-in. The plot seemed like four unrelated stories crudely slapped together by having the Sam character appear in the background of each. The pacing was terrible, even considering the runtime is only 80-something minutes. There wasn't even that much violence or gore, and at times I was left wondering if I was actually watching an R-rated horror movie. What parts were scary? The only thing frightening about this film is how many tired cliches and predictable tropes are jammed into it.

If you are a fan of this movie, please explain why you like it without insulting me just because I have a different opinion.

This movie is my #1 movie to watch on Halloween. I think that it captures the holiday and my favorite elements of the holiday perfectly. I care more for "spookiness" than gore or violence in a movie, and this movie delivered well in that aspect.

The stories are meant to be fairly loosely connected. The movie was very non-linear and I liked that. Instead of being a very simplistic plot like Halloween where you see the characters from start to end evading Michael Myers in a linear order of events, you get a much more complex picture of a halloween night in this town and all the different stuff going on. I think they did a good job in that regard.

Its ok to not like a movie. The thing I have an issue with is when people stubbornly dislike a movie and refuse to understand why others do, and spend unnecessary amounts of time trolling boards and posting exaggerated reviews. As long as you arent doing that, I don't have any issues.

I have to agree with the Original Poster.

I should have really loved this movie. I love Halloween, scary movies and anthology movies -- I have a soft spot for even goofy anthologies, the Amicus films, Creepshow movies and so on and so on.

So why don't I like this one? Bad acting? Maybe, but lots of horror movies have that problem and sometimes it's part of the fun of what your getting. Nothing original? Predictable? Check, Check -- but again, many scary movies go back to the same tried and true formulas. Not scary? Yeah, that too, but some scary movies aren't all that scary, but still fun to watch.

So I'm not sure why I didn't like it. Maybe it was over-hyped -- people thought it was overlooked and deserved better and so they spread the word, I guess. I didn't hate it, but I am puzzled about why it gets such high approval ratings. It's OK, but nothing more IMO.

It is a niche film, not everyone is going to like it.

it's my favorite movie to watch at Halloween ..

it's not a horrofilm .. it's a Halloween film.
I'm pretty sure it was meant to be cliched as it tries to explain a few Halloween traditions and myths.

I love it and I watch it every Halloween. Best movie to put you in the Halloween spirit.

for sh*ts and giggles I guess, some just like cheesy horror.

I found it to be a very creative movie that built up its own mythology.

The fact that you don't even know it's an anthology kinda shows how dumb your opinion is.

i didn't like it..
i thought it tried too hard to be clever and maybe even a hip, updated version of Creepshow.

it failed
