What is there to like about this movie?

Let me begin by saying I have a right to my opinion just as much as you, so please save the "you must have just not understood it" and "why don't you go watch ____" comments.

I don't understand why this movie has such a high rating (85% on Rotten Tomatoes) and gets so much praise on these boards. Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't see the appeal.

The only good thing I can say about this film is that the cinematography is pretty good and the music was well-done. Literally everything else this movie had to offer fell flat.

The acting performances ranged from comically bad to completely phoned-in. The plot seemed like four unrelated stories crudely slapped together by having the Sam character appear in the background of each. The pacing was terrible, even considering the runtime is only 80-something minutes. There wasn't even that much violence or gore, and at times I was left wondering if I was actually watching an R-rated horror movie. What parts were scary? The only thing frightening about this film is how many tired cliches and predictable tropes are jammed into it.

If you are a fan of this movie, please explain why you like it without insulting me just because I have a different opinion.

Yes, you absolutely do. But we also have the right to say those things to you. It works both ways. Your right to voice your opinion does not shield you from being criticized.

I disagree. I think the acting was fine. Not great, but it is just meant to be a fun horror movie. The dad was particularly creepy and funny. And Brian Cox is always good.

Very good. That's called an anthology.

The pacing was terrible, even considering the runtime is only 80-something minutes.

Each individual story had its own pacing. It works.

There wasn't even that much violence or gore, and at times I was left wondering if I was actually watching an R-rated horror movie.

It's not a gorn film. A movie need not have extreme levels of violence or gore to be R-rated.

What parts were scary?

A principal poisoning a child. A man being stalked in his own house. Children wandering alone in a haunted quarry.

There were plenty of scary parts.

Can't stop the signal.

The principal poisoning the child wasn't scary, it was F'ing disgusting. I had to turn the movie off it was so offensive.I don't mind kids in horror movies, but that was just overly done and really gross and offensive.

Yeah. It was gross. But also horrific that a man would poison a child.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

Sure, but the way-over-the-top & stupid vulgarity seemed to make light of any horror. I really don't get the appeal of this one at all. It's an awfully long short film.

OMG. Your words sound like something right out of the mouth of one of the "Mean Girls," (I'm thinking from the "Hotties With Attitude" table in the caf), and YOU'RE accusing someone of reacting "like a little girl?" LOL!
Honestly, I am rapidly approaching the point of not even bothering to consult imdb because of the overabundance of immature, arrested adolescent armchair critics projecting personal issues onto a movie, and then screaming, "WORST MOVIE EVER!!"
I'm beginning to think this is the WORST INTERNET COMMUNITY EVER!!

Janet.

Breastesses!

Grow up you rude jerk !

Offensive my ass, it was just disturbing. Maybe that'll teach him not to take more than one piece of candy.

Hm. I thought each story was really bad. I thought the acting was probably the worst part next to the writing. It just wasn't good. It deserved the straight to DVD release. It's not "cult" it's not "classic" it's simply bad. I get it's an anthology but it still was awful. I just was watching it and it felt predictable, cliche horror, and not fun or scary. I'm glad there wasn't much gore or violence because stuff like that doesn't make a good horror movie- you don't need gore or violence to have a good horror film. So that was one part I enjoyed, still this movie had no other redeming qualities.

A principle poisining a child? Not scary. lol, it was laughable. A man being stalked in his own house? Oh no please don't stalk me. lol. Children wandering alone? ....Not scary.

There were no scary parts.

You're right. Each individual story had its own pacing and they all were bad.

Now if this was the type of horror film were it was supposed to be so bad that it was good then I can understand or if its a comedic horror film, then perhaps I can understand, but even then the acting was too bad for me, even if it was purposely bad.

Yes. In American horror, the virgins always turn into werewolves, children are poisoned and beheaded by trustworthy adults and Samhain incarnate is always the antagonist. Been done a million times.

It's a modern version of the 50's comic book Anthology, Like:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069341/?ref_=nv_sr_3

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083767/?ref_=nv_sr_1

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082509/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

It's designed to be 4 loosely linked stories, that is what these are, each story is supposed to have a certain amount of "cheesiness", comedy and horror followed by a twist ending.

. There wasn't even that much violence or gore, and at times I was left wondering if I was actually watching an R-rated horror movie. What parts were scary? The only thing frightening about this film is how many tired cliches and predictable tropes are jammed into it.

did you miss the adult themes, displays of tits, man having sex with a pig and a broken bone sticking through a dying mans leg?

please explain why you like it without insulting me just because I have a different opinion.

Because it takes a tired and predictable formula and changes it JUST enough to stand out from the other anthology films, while at the same time staying very true to they genre.
It's perfectly understandable, if you were expecting a horror movie, and have never seen an anthology film before that this would seem really odd.

reply

The Janet character had big breastesses. That's pretty lick- I mean, likable!

reply

I didn't care for it much, either. It felt like it was slapped together in a hurry.

reply

i enjoyed the movie because it seems to me like the idea of a perfect halloween night.

there is a sense of nostalgia in that at least for me it makes me think to when i was a teenager, kind of like watching old movies i enjoyed like Heavyweights, Mighty Ducks, Little Giants.

and in general i like anthology stuff like tales from the crypt.

reply

This movie is incredibly overrated. I didn't enjoy any of the stories.
What a waste of film.

reply

I gave it a 10 and bought it on Amazon. I thought it was the most innovative and new Halloween-formulaic film ever made. An anthology about Halloween fun! I LOVE this!!

"I have nipples, Greg. Could you milk me?"

reply

I agree fully! It captures the overall atmosphere of Halloween better than any other film.

reply

I agree. I thought the movie was absolute garbage.

What are you 12? Can't people dislike or like different things from you without you getting butthurt? Your reaction is so full of implying and overreacting that I'm not even sure you aren't trolling.

I too would like to know what was good in this movie. It certainly isn't bad or the worst, but it does have an unusually high score for what it was, especially compared to others. Maybe I missed something while watching, so that took away from my experience, that's why I too would ask the same question as the poster. Discussion doesn't have to be a bad thing, disagreement doesn't have to be bad.
