HORRIFIC VOMIT

Being a HUGE WKW fan and having lived in Hong Kong and spent hours walking the streets to find scenes and shots from his films I was so excited to hear about a new film coming out.

I watched it.

I lied.

I actually only watched 22 minutes of it and thought I was going to throw up.

It was the biggest pile of *beep* I have ever seen. Forced. Awkward. Like a pathetic art school student trying to make a WKW film.

Jude Law was Horrific... as much passion as a mannekin, the less said about norah jones the better... I didn't even see up till natalie portmans character but she annoys the living tits off me so I dont regret it.

What a horrible mistake. He is the laughing stock of the movie industry at the moment.. the next one better be a corker.

I am stuck on Tsai Ming Liangs films at the moment.. "what time is it there"is a masterpiece.. check it out.

I agree. I could only get through about 17 minutes of this movie. It disappointed me because I like all of the actors featured but I just couldnt do it.
It struck me as the kind of movie I would have pretended to like in high school just because I thought it was cool and high brow.

This movie is one good example as to why "art films" get a bad wrap.
The most self-indulged, pretentious, incoherent film-making at it's worse...
And it is pretty pathetic that Kar Wai Wong was nominated at Cannes 2007.
I guess they had to suck up to the former juror...

reply

well, I absolutely loved this movie.
So ... you know... to each his own.

I thought this movie had themes very similar to Chungking Express. It was light and sentimental, with the classic poetic cornyness and the signature photography of WKW.

But people are always looking for reasons to hate movies .. so I really don't concern myself with topics such as this one.

reply

I totally agree.

I was never bored that much while watching a movie.

How did the movie get 7 points.

I thought this film was totally crap. Completely shallow and pointless. Didn't feel anything for any of the characters, let alone the protagonist, because there was zero character development. Apart from the brief couple of minutes the girls were driving across the Nevada desert, there were only about 4 different rooms in the entire film, all dark and poorly lit. And talk about slow, it took about 25 minutes for the first scene to end, and it didn't exactly get any better. The only reason I didn't switch it off was because I was determined to watch it all after having paid for it. What a total waste of time and money. I thought the trailer made it look interesting and exciting - it couldn't have been more misleading. A huge disappointment.

reply

I'm glad that another WKW feels the same. I only made it through 25 mins before having to shut it off myself.

true it is bad but consider the many flaws/brilliance on WKW:

As any WKW fans know, he works without a script. Hence, this affects the Western actors. It may have translated well with his usual repertoire of actors who understand the madness but especially not the newly and cutey NJ, not so much there.

I dont think he is ready for a Western audience or talents in that matter. ANd reversely, I dont think the Western audience and actors are ready for his talents either.

THroughout the film I kept measuring every woman to Maggie Cheung. I wonder if he is fixated on that images of her, so deep that he couldnt see anyone but her. All are brunette and with big eyes, except the fakey blond NP (but she is a gambler). In many ways looking so similar to each other. Not too much in ages either. It is like all the young girls are impressing themselves to be experienced women. Not much character polarizations. It seems like all of them are just one single character/woman.

Rachel Weiz is not a convincing Southern wife. SHe should have been blond and trashy. Too thin and european. The assistant writer is to blame. He is an AMerican, at least he should know how to translate this nor alot of the dialogue as how a gambler would talk or a cafe owner would talk or southern wife would talk...

NP follows right behind that for a city girl looking.

Nevermind JL, he is just another pretty face in this poorly translated film. His role should have been played by Takeshi Kaneshiro.

Imagine this same film with Tony Leung and WKW's usual cast in Hong Kong or anywhere, it would have worked just as well as In the Mood...

The film is too much on visual and not substance.

I figure this would be the case but i had to see it to see if i am wrong.

WKW is still one of my favorite Dir. He is trying, a stretch but still good to see him working. I would love to see this with Chinese talents instead. More mysterious and more on his ground...and none of the accents, typecasting or smugginess that we are or not accustomed to when WKW concerns...

sorry to repeat but i will make a new post from this...i am afraid my response will be buried in here...just want to see if anyone agrees to me is all...no troll hogs here..

i don't really feel strongly one way or the other about this movie. didn't think it was great. didn't think it was terrible. that said, the original poster is a moron. some people are so pathetically awful at expressing their lame opinions. message boards are a great way to see this but really...original poster guy, you totally win.

reply

I think it's just a prejudice. Wong Kar-Wai is my favorite director too. And I was as negative about him making a movie with Western actors as many other people. And I couldn't bring myself to watch it til now.

And I actually liked it. Yes, it wasn't as natural as with Asians actors. But you just have to let go that image, to compare them with Tony leung and Maggie Cheung all the time. Of course, it's not his best movie. But come on, just because he shoots from a script doesn't mean it's a bad script. It was still nice.

He is still Wong Kar-Wai and you're insulting him making him look so stupid as a filmmaker that he can't work with Western actors or shoot from a script! He has enough talent as a filmmaker to try tell a story like that. Everyone want to try something new sometime and he did so with this movie.

It is a nice movie.

This was a credential card for american audiences. It happens every day with asian filmmakers. The movie is trite, derivative, yes, and everything told here has been exposed much better in other WKW films, but the reason of doing "My blueberry nights" wasn't making a step further in WKW career, or filming a groundbreaking entry in his filmography, but presenting an unknown (for the general audience) director making an accesible movie.

People bashing this movie, and calling it "HORRIFIC VOMIT" (I would like to know what they think then about movies like "Transformers 2"), are not being objective. They shouldn't be so drastic, because they could turn some people off to watch a good movie, only because it didn't match "their" expectations.

It could have been worse. Chen Kaige's credential card was "Killing me softly".

annoys the living tits off me...

I'm sorry but that specific part of the OP's post gave me a huge laugh and an oddly disturbing, and erotic image of boobs bouncing around in disgust over the movie. Lmao, arrest me I'm weird!!

reply

I'm sorry, but i kinda like this film. and norah jones is NOT "annoying and pathetic", I mean sure she takes mesures most wouldnt after a break up, but i know a couple of people who threatend to kill themselves after their break ups. So in conclusion, i like the film, if you don't cool, fine, woopy. but have you considered that maybe the movie doesn't suck, maybe it's just not ur type of film? for example, i generaly don't dig artsy films, but i would never say they're bad (per se) i will say they aren't my type of film. anyway thats just my opinion. take it for what you will.

Sorry but BN is very similar to WKW's other work, If you saw a huge difference it can only be because you perceive his HK characters as "exotic" and "inscrutable" because you are a racist. And you think you're Oh So Cool to like HK films so a film with western actors people have heard of must be reviled because you are a pretentious pseudo-intellectual.
