HORRIFIC VOMIT

Being a HUGE WKW fan and having lived in Hong Kong and spent hours walking the streets to find scenes and shots from his films I was so excited to hear about a new film coming out.

I watched it.

I lied.

I actually only watched 22 minutes of it and thought I was going to throw up.

It was the biggest pile of *beep* I have ever seen. Forced. Awkward. Like a pathetic art school student trying to make a WKW film.

Jude Law was Horrific... as much passion as a mannekin, the less said about norah jones the better... I didn't even see up till natalie portmans character but she annoys the living tits off me so I dont regret it.

What a horrible mistake. He is the laughing stock of the movie industry at the moment.. the next one better be a corker.

I am stuck on Tsai Ming Liangs films at the moment.. "what time is it there"is a masterpiece.. check it out.

Hypocrites ! That's all I have to say to those self-proclaimed WKW fans who doesnt even dare following him into his different experiments. I know that this isnt his best film. But it's still one of his films and has its place in his global work.

Self-proclaimed fans whining on boards are just hypocrites. They can't like something else, they just like themselves through it.

i have the right to not like a movie of a guy who is my favourite director.

i am expecting a good movie, not just an experiment.

@thecloudy

Then you only have your own expectations to blame ! You have the right to not like it but I have then the right to think that its not true that he's your favourite director...whoever you are man ! :)

Being a huge fan of mindless losers ranting on the net, I read your review. O.K. I lied, I only read the first 8 words.

But I easily deduced that you are the spawn of a retarded monkey & Leonard Maltin.

Your review was the biggest pile of expletive I've ever read. Actually, you're more like the spawn of a goat with down syndrome & Michael Medved trying to be the spawn of a retarded monkey & Leonard Maltin.

You are the laughing stock of pathetic wannabees at the moment.

I am stuck on myself & the phrase 'at the moment' at the moment. My review of your review is a masterpiece... check it out.

I didn't expect anything (mainly because in Belgium to the critical reception was not good), wasn't trying to look for a story or see motives or depths in the characters. When I go to see a WKW movie it's always about the images.

And I loved it.

reply

I agree, this is Wong Kar Wai's worst film. Norah Jones was annoying and pathetic. The first couple minutes was horrible,..the film does get a little better at the end. Maybe if he spent more time and casted different people, it would have been better.

reply

AMEN kveracthert !

"It's always about the images"

Surprisingly not many people gets it...

reply

I get it alright....but life is too short to waste
precious time on something so poorly though out and
produced. No respect for the audience who is left
to "figure it all out" and then decide, "why bother?"
There is no depth of character profile and even the
plot begs for some humanity, rather than childish
meanderings...He may be a gifted writer/director, but
this production negates his capacity for capturing the
essence of mood. Sorry, but I really wanted to like it
and was sorely disappointed.

reply

Not that it matters, I'm curious to how old you are? Just wanted to know the age range of who liked this vs who doesn't, I'm 25 and from the trailer, it looked like a good film

I'm watching it right now on my other monitor. Five minutes in it seems horribly contrived. The notion that a restaurateur, in New York no less, would remember people who left keys in his restaurant is preposterous. On top of that, Nora Jones sounds like she's reading her lines off cue cards.

Gotta agree with the O.P. (altho this thread's title is a bit much). I've enjoyed most of WKW's films but Blueberry Nights is close to a total failure. He drags out every cliche of Americana imaginable (New York cafe beneath the elevated tracks, Deep South juke joint and diner, Las Vegas fer crissakes) and deploys them in ways that haven't been relevant since the 1960s. Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman seemed to think they were in a roadshow production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Nora Jones (while better than I expected) is no Faye Wong when it comes to pop star acting.

Symbolism? Gimme a break. The plot is nothing but half-baked BS. The only thing interesting about this movie was the well-known WKW visual style, which is contrived but always interesting.

One last thing: I don't blame the O.P. for giving up after 22 minutes. I had to watch this movie over THREE nights because I couldn't take more than 30 minutes of it at a time.

I don't rattle, kid. But just for that, I'm gonna beat you flat.

I basically agree but would not be quite so graphic in describing my distaste for the film. In retrospect I am sorry that I did suffer through the whole thing. I wanted to eject the DVD but thought it would get better or perhaps that Norah would sing. NOT. What point was the director trying to make with all the shots of the fast moving elevated subway trains?

reply

I watched this movie based on high IMDB average ratings. Actually, I only watched about a half hour because I fell asleep. I can't bring myself to watch the rest because there was nothing redeeming about the first 30 minutes. I was planning on forcing myself to watch the rest, but after seeing fellow haters on this thread I think I'll spend my time doing something else.

WKW is one of my favorite directors and yet I have to agree with you. I waited so long to finally see this film and was disappointed to say the least. I love WKW's work but this, this was really a let-down. The acting (Norah Jones?? Jude Law?), the plot....

"Forced. Awkward. Like a pathetic art school student trying to make a WKW film." - Agreed.

reply

haha, agreed. 2046 is one of my absolute favorite films ever along with Fallen Angels but this was just sooo bad. i made it through like 40 minutes laughing my ass off the whole time at how bad it was.
