HORRIFIC VOMIT

Being a HUGE WKW fan and having lived in Hong Kong and spent hours walking the streets to find scenes and shots from his films I was so excited to hear about a new film coming out.

I watched it.

I lied.

I actually only watched 22 minutes of it and thought I was going to throw up.

It was the biggest pile of *beep* I have ever seen. Forced. Awkward. Like a pathetic art school student trying to make a WKW film.

Jude Law was Horrific... as much passion as a mannekin, the less said about norah jones the better... I didn't even see up till natalie portmans character but she annoys the living tits off me so I dont regret it.

What a horrible mistake. He is the laughing stock of the movie industry at the moment.. the next one better be a corker.

I am stuck on Tsai Ming Liangs films at the moment.. "what time is it there"is a masterpiece.. check it out.

some huge fan you are, didn't even finish the movie. totally pathetic.

reply

Agreed. I mean.. footage of ice cream melting now and then..! Ooh, artsy.

reply

Well, I did finish the movie, and couldn't believe this was Wong Kar Wai. Okay, I've only seen eight of his films, all at the cinema, and some of those numerous times. But this film is just a pathetic excuse... :-(
5/10

I thought it got much better during the second segment (Memphis). You might want to watch more of it when you get a chance.

I agree. Being a HUGE fan of WKW-
even have an autograph framed, i was very disappointed…
Although when I heard he will do an American movie I had many doubts
and short of expected it not to be extraordinary.

"HORRIFIC VOMIT" ... Best thread title EVER.

While I do agree this movie is not worth the rating shown on the front page, I believe one can only truely judge, in this case a movie, when you try to experience or understand what you have been shown.

Storming out a movie theater or whereever you've seen it does not earn any respect.

Now, I'm not sure if the cinematographicallity (if that word exists, no it does not) wrongly portrait the performance captured of the actors but my impression was that it was not any good.

And while I am not a fanatic of any sort, I do like good cinema, and this was not it.

A good movie by an HK director that came out recently was "The Mad Detective" by Johnnie To.

Bad? You didn't even see the whole movie, so shut up.

This isn't really my type of movie, I prefer action stuff... Yet I decided to give this one a chance since I liked Chunking express.

There were a couple of things that could've been eliminated to make the movie better, such as Katya, which I think was completely unnecessary.

Those who didn't realize Jeremy was talking about himself when he told the story of the Manchester guy shouldn't even be posting here! Anyone with an iq>40 could've realized that Jeremy was talking about himself, if you can't figure that out, you obviously can't figure a whole movie, so please go back to GaiaOnline.

I enjoyed this movie. I'm not saying it's the best movie ever since, as I said, it's not really the kind of movie I normally watch.

I really liked how deep the characters were. The main one, Elizabeth, was the most SHALLOW character of them all. To the point that she began to exasperate me a little, however, there's a turning point in the casino when she decides to risk everything and drastically change, evolve, grow. Become a slightly complex character such as the ones she had met during her trip.

All those who talk about her motif being the car should start using the SMART part of their brain. The car was just a pretext, a SYMBOL. The real reason she left was because she was completely heart-broken and wanted to change, the car is something that helps you move, so it means she wanted to MOVE ON, symbolised by a physical car (again, anyone with iq>40 gets this). Maybe it's not a strong motivation but that's not what the movie focuses on, at least, the movie focuses on the other characters and how Beth sees her life reflected on them. The motif comes back at the very end, when she admits it took her about a year to "cross the street", to get over her past, to grow up and to move on.

Of course, you don't know this since you only watched 22 minutes of it.

Awful. The worst thing about it for me was that it made me question my admiration for WKW. What if his HK films are just as badly written and I just like them because I don't understand the language and the subtitling guys are saving his ass? Nahhh, it can't be...

I went to the early afternoon showing...and fell asleep about fifteen minutes into it. After being nudged to awake, I made it through the rest of the film. Overall, it presented some interesting themes. IMDB estimated a $10m budget on this film. Aside from the diner/bar and casino area (and the rented Jaguar), where did all the money go???? For the actors??? I thought this was an art house film. The only people who will make money on this film are the actors and their respective agents. The film is an absolute total failure at the box office.
