5.7? This movie is the rare (at least in Hollywood these days) film that is both very funny and family friendly at the same time. The innocence in the film and lack of crudeness was so refreshing. A previous poster put it best when stating that they didn't know how anyone couldn't have a massive smile on the face at the end of the film. Like "Napolean Dynamite" a truly Great, innocent and refreshing comedy.
When NL came out, I just got canned after working two years at a job I loved. Needless to say, I needed cheering up. This movie saved me from going CRAYSEE!
haha! too true! the number of times i catch myself singing that ridiculous "religious man" song... not to mention the fact that the one and only Beck played a good part adding to the score/soundtrack.
I agree, and I am glad to see that a lot of people recognize the value of this movie. I think it's great, and very inspiring.
To understand this movie, you must see it through the eyes of Chancho, the little boy. He is the point of view of the audience, trying to understand the Friar Ignacio (Nacho). In my opinion, the most important line in the movie (and not even included in the IMDB quotes!) is Nacho telling Chancho, "I am the gatekeeper of my own destiny, and I will have my day in the hot sun." When Chancho believes in him, the audience does, too.
It is also my opinion that this movie is as touching as it is only by accident. The dignity and the seriousness was meant as a contrast for the comedy. And it is funny. But the dignity won out.
The only thing more hilarious than this film is the IMDB voters. What a sad bunch. I was in tears today seeing this film. Jack is just on fire. To think 'Salt' has a whole point higher rating than this film...
I Agree as i can't believe this film has such a low rating. I'm not saying its the greatest film on gods green earth... that goes to "the godfather" :) but for what it is... a light hearted Comedy with great laughs it does its job. I own it on DVD and have watched it a few times. Bests scene for me is when he starts singing to Ramses in typical Jack Black style... brilliant. Also love the corn on the cobh part!!
I agree with all the comments above. This movie is very funny. Like Napoleon Dynamite, some people won't get it, but it's definitely one of Jack Black's better pictures. Don't let the rating on the front of the page fool you. You may have to watch this a couple times to really see just how funny this movie is. It's very well done. I didn't get Napoleon Dynamite initially either. I had to watch it 3-4 times before I found all the subtle funny skits in the film. You don't see it all on it's first viewing. My wife and I have watched it well over 10 times now (from beginning to end) and we still laugh. Nacho Libre is the same way. This is a must have JB flick.
This is quite simply brilliant, I'm not normally the biggest Jack Black fan in the world but he's great in this. My favourite line in the film, "these eagle eggs gave me no eagle powers, they gave me no nutrients"
