Why does everyone hate Hayley
She's not my fav character or anything, but I thought she was tough, cool headed and smart. She was the perfect match to Jeffs charming likeable persona.

The film slowly reveals Jeff's guilt. This allows the audience to question whether Haley's actions are justified and most sane people would realize that if there was even a chance of him being innocent of that girl's murder then the severe psychological torture and coercion to commit suicide were extremely immoral and unjust acts.
The way Haley is extremely smug, sadistic, and teasing in her demeanor only serve to make the viewer question her motives. Is she enjoying the inflicting of pain on another human being or is she actually pursuing justice?
While they are extremely depraved and deserve the strongest punishments society has, Pedophiles are still human beings and by such I believe it is immoral to delight in the pain and hell their actions surely will bring down upon them. That is closer to the crux of the divide on these characters I believe as some people may violently oppose such a stance. I did not delight in the torture Haley inflicted and began to feel like this was revenge porn, that being over the top depictions of revenge for no other purpose than for the audience to enjoy.
In short, this is another conflict between vengeance(the act of doing something to hurt someone because that person did something that hurt you or someone else) vs justice (the process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals).
There seem to be an odd number of people justifying pedophilia as "If you don't act on it, it isn't Pedo." Welcome to the internet, where weirdos justify themselves.
You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake.
I assume only kiddie fiddlers would hate Hayley!
Its that man again!!
I think it made the mambla and pedophile community in general mad. They've convinced themselves having sex with children is normal.
shareThe disconnect I have with the movie is that even though Jeff is a horrible person and we are supposed to root for the girl who is giving him "justice", we never see his victims. We are only told he is a pedophile, or murderer, but never actually see him committing his crimes on screen. Whereas the crime that the girl is committing (yes it's still a crime even if it's being done to a criminal or someone who you believe deserves it) is very much on screen and rather graphic.
So he is being portrayed as the victim, and she as the tormenter. And because they never show his victims on screen, all he is seen as is a victim. So naturally I could only feel sympathy for what he is going through. Yes his victims went through the same ordeal, but this was never shown, and maybe it should have, to make us hate him and not feel bad for him. As it was, you're supposed to root for a ruthless, relentless, psychotic girl who's taking the law into her own hands and enjoying the torture, which I have trouble doing. And that's all you see her doing.
If we're supposed to like her, they should make her the victim, but she escapes and then turns the tables on him mid way. Then he totally deserves it, and she is justified. What we instead got was a one and a half hours of torture porn that was painful to watch.
but that's partly the point. it is supposed to show, that those predators aren't exclusively some creepy looking basement crawlers. jeff is portrayed as a generally likeable, relatively normal, successful guy, which in a way makes it even more threatening that he is one of "them".
does it really matter in the end, if we have witnessed the crimes. towards the end of the film we know pretty clearly what he did. human empathy should be enough to understand how bad his crime was.
it does not matter if we LIKE hailey. as she said so well herself, "I am every little girl you ever watched, touched, hurt, screwed, killed. "
she is the statement and she is the manifestation of that notion.
all she does is to get confirmed, what she already knows. by all means neccessary.
if the story would be predator finding prey and the prey turning the tables, this would just be another exploitation film.
"laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone." - Dae-su Oh
How is it not "just another exploitation film"? The film is literally just 90 minutes of torture and insane vigilantism, nearly glorifying both things through a young sociopath. The only thing that's different here from a typical exploitation film is the gender and age role-reversal. I feel like there needed to be a lot more to this film to empathize with Haley. Generally these revenge thrillers have a lot more exposition and, well, the (lunatic) vigilante usually meets an untimely end.
shareit is not in any way of the definition.
there is no clear black n white situation. there is no "someone gets wronged and in return the predator has to burn".
is clearly not glorified, since a) most of the audience does not feel sympathy for hayley and b) hayley herself brings in the possibillity of her being a psychopath. there is none of the usual "ultra bad guy seeks out to destroy innocence" as it was if there was a glorified revenge. the first half hour jeff is portrayed rather sympathetic, even though you know that there is something wrong with him and hayley is portrayed as bat crap crazy. it is only later revealed that she actually has a point.
"The only thing that's different here from a typical exploitation film is the gender and age role-reversal."
ahum, no. first of all it usually "the girl gets wronged and kills her attackers in revenge", so there is no role reversal. also, this is much more complicated. a) hayley wasn't attacked, b) we don't know if she really knows the girl she claims having been a friend of her c) we are left in the open about the level of involvement of jeff in the crime ..etc. furthermore opposed to a an exploitation movie you are not supposed to get a kick out of hayley's supposed "revenge". and if that wasn't enough, she is not torturing for fun. all she wants is him confirming, what she already knows and then gives him an option.
"I feel like there needed to be a lot more to this film to empathize with Haley."
you are not supposed to.
"Generally these revenge thrillers have a lot more exposition"
this isn't a revenge thriller.
"the (lunatic) vigilante"
she isn't.

Only the fellow pedophiles would even think of defending a guy like Jeff! I can't believe how many stupid people are defending him! And you know the ones who are defending him are all guys, right? Men are sick in the head freaks who have a taste for little girls. They can all deny it but we all know it's true!
shareI think that hate for her is because that character will without a doubt murder people in her lifetime.
shareWe're not supposed to root for either one. Neither of them is a hero. BOTH are villains. Jeff is a child molester and Hayley is clearly a sociopath.
A lot of people try to justify Hayley's actions by saying that she did them to a child molester. But two wrongs do not make a right. Does Hayley go to the police with her evidence? Does she attempt to turn him over to the authorities? Does she do anything legally? Nope - she takes the law into her own hands and tortures Jeff for hours. Again just because he's a criminal, it does not justify it. Might does not equal right.
I always got the impression that Hayley was just as bad as Jeff, and she chooses to target other evil doers just so she can get away with her own crimes. The question is if evil doers won't satisfy her any more, will she go after innocent people?
they are not on the same level. motivation is what makes the difference in this case.
shareMotivation means nothing when the results are the same. Hayley cared more about getting off on torturing someone rather than keeping a predator off the streets. She outright says she doesn't want to turn him in because he wouldn't be punished enough. That is the clear indicator of a sociopath. Just because she's targeting a fellow evildoer doesn't make her any less evil herself.
of course it does. that's why we have the death penalty.
person a kills person b for profit.
person c kills person d because person d killed his son.
the same thing? really?
"Hayley cared more about getting off on torturing someone rather than keeping a predator off the streets. "
that's what you would like to belief. the question is "why would you like to believe that".
"She outright says she doesn't want to turn him in because he wouldn't be punished enough."
she gives him all the chance in the world to turn himself in. right until the very in.
"That is the clear indicator of a sociopath."
psychopath.
"Just because she's targeting a fellow evildoer doesn't make her any less evil herself.
"
actually it does. also, she doesn't kill him. he got legit options.
