Most annoying character

I thought SJP's character was the most irritating and unlikeable person in the entire film. From the board topics, it seems like most people had problems with the family, but I thought their quirks actually made them relatable and interesting. SJP's character on the other hand had no redeeming qualities (other than good taste in Christmas gifts.) The entire time she was onscreen I just wanted to gauge my eyes and eardrums out.

This movie would have been so much better if they'd tweaked that character a bit; or perhaps cast an actress who could have made the character likeable.

Diane Keaton's character was the worst for me! She was so nasty to Meredith. Sure, Meredith was very uptight, but the way she treated Meredith was awful.

I loved this movie because I cannot STAND SJP. It may sound mean, but I liked seeing them all disapprove of her. She did not fit with Everett and it was very apparent that they would not work out. I know what it is like when a family doesn't like a new comer, but usually they have some viable reasons. THEY DID!

She looks like a foot.

Oddly enough, I found Meredith the most likable character in the whole movie. Not that she was great or anything, but the Stones were such horrible, hateful people, she looked good by comparison. To me, a happy ending would have been her storming out of the house and then the boiler exploding killing all inside. It's the only time I have ever watched a movie and actually cheered when somebody died of cancer.

reply

Lol I actually agree. The family was very hateful. It wouldn't have been horrible seeing them burn alive.

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

Holy Carp, the way they all ganged up on Meredith when she made the comment about whether or not you want your kid to be born gay. What I got from what she said is that you may love your child even if he or she is gay, but the rest of the world may not share your open views on the subject. Like it or not, there is still prejudice in the world against gays, and obstacles they must overcome that result from that prejudice. It must be painful for a parent to see their beloved child go through this.

Julie! What kind of bi!#@ sister comes somewhere to "support" her sister & ends up coming on to her sister's boyfriend? I mean WHO does that to their sister? I certainly could not do that to my sister, cousin, or even just a friend!

Everett- Nice support for your girlfriend there buddy. Oh, & nice that you come on to her sister while you're out "looking" for your girlfriend. He's just a jerk!

Thad- Meredith tried to be nice by clearly speaking for him to lip read & talked a little loud. I don't think she realized she was yelling. Plus, he was wearing hearing aids. So, maybe she didn't know if he had implants or whatever. He seemed like he was going to be sympathetic to her at first & then turned out to be as nasty as the rest!

Go shake down the 7-11 for a day old wiener. Melvin- As Good as it Gets

reply

Thad--most definitely. The way he pouted at the dinner table after Meredith's comments made me sick. He's just been through adoption meetings where they would have asked him all sorts of things about his relationship and he gets in a huff over that?

He was needlessly bitchy too. The only nice charachters were Patrick and Luke Wilson's charachter.

Meredith. I saw this movie once and I'll wait a while before seeing it again because her character was just so...stupid. A lot of the stuff that happened to her she did it to herself. She annoyed me so much. Enough to almost ruin the movie but not quite.

Sybil was irritating but hey, that's what sometimes happens when your first son brings home a woman to marry.

Amy made me want to slap her. She was the stereotypical youngest bratty child and for some odd reason whenever she made a catty comment I kept thinking about Regina George lol.

Most annpying....a tie between SJP's Meredeth and Dianne Keaton's Sybil
Most endearing.....Luke Wilson's character Ben

reply

It was a tie between Sybil and Amy. No matter how annoying Meredith was, it was nothing compared to outright cruelty and arrogance of the Stones.

Amy was a bratty sh*t-starter, from the introductions, to the game of charades. And Sybil just acted crass, thinly disguised as being liberal.

Meredith's actions were caused by her nervousness and wanting to impress her fiance's family. Amy and Sybil were just mean. It was one of the first times where I've seen a movie and didn't feel bad about a character dying in the end. Sybil was just that horrible.

What I loved about this movie is that even if I disliked some of the character's actions, I could understand their motivations. That's what made this move quite real and I really liked that. I hate movies where everybody is super nice and clean. This movie showed different sides to the characters and I was really impressed with that.

Take Amy for example. Yes she was mean but she probably loved her brother and felt protective even if he was older. So when the brother ended up with a woman so different from her and the rest of the family it probably dissapointed her. We could all be dissapointed by something like that I think, but hopefully most people would not be so mean about it. But it was a lovely moment when Amy got the present from Meredith and you could tell Amy felt really bad. Great stuff.

reply

Bruarvatn, so true about understanding the character's motivations. Still I couldn't help but be annoyed with Sybil troughout the film - she was the mother after all, and even though I guess I understand her, I just feel like she ought to have behaved herself much better than she did.

However, the most annoying character to me was probably Everett. No real reason - I just think he's so pathetic. I can't stand how he first doesn't try hard enough to stand up for Meredith, and then falls for her sister...

But I liked Amy all trough the movie, unlike some of you. I can obviously see why she would be annoying, but I still think she was mostly endearing despite (or maybe because of) her bad behaviour.

The whole g-ddam cast.

I didn't like the dad. He was sooooo rude to SJP's character in the dinner scene. Him yelling like that was way over the line.

reply

I'm not a huge fan of SJP, but I love this movie. I find it interesting that everyone keeps pointing out the flaws with characters when, I think those flaws are exactly the intention of the writers when creating said characters and relationships. Example, some other actress playing Meredith to make her more "likable". Why? She isn't supposed to be liked by the family. Why should the viewer be forced to like her more? The story is all about fitting a square peg into a round hole. She does not fit initially with the Stone family. The character development allows for her to find a place. Then, with Everitt's lack of chemistry with Meredith...again, I find it intentional. It allows you to understand why he would fall so quickly for someone he just met. He has no chemistry with this woman. He doesn't even love her like he tries to convince himself of. It's implied in the movie that he is only trying to get married to "fix" his mom's health issues. "It's not gonna make me better Kiddo." Don't quote me on that line, but it's similar in effect. It seems to me this movie did it's job when people are so passionate about hating these characters...you obviously got the point across about how this family dynamic would feel. All the negative remarks make me sad because this is honestly one of my favorite movies.

reply

Dudes.. She's supposed to be annoying and uncomfortable in her own skin. That was the whole point.

reply

Exactly. And the fact they all ganged up on her and took the judgmental approach without even giving her a chanceā€¦.it's no wonder she became even more insecure than she already was.
