Most annoying character

I thought SJP's character was the most irritating and unlikeable person in the entire film. From the board topics, it seems like most people had problems with the family, but I thought their quirks actually made them relatable and interesting. SJP's character on the other hand had no redeeming qualities (other than good taste in Christmas gifts.) The entire time she was onscreen I just wanted to gauge my eyes and eardrums out.

This movie would have been so much better if they'd tweaked that character a bit; or perhaps cast an actress who could have made the character likeable.

I agree, I love SJP but I think Gwyneth Paltrow would have done better in that role.. I think she may have come across a little more likable.. just my opinion.

Maybe you didn't like Gwneths character, because Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't in the movie.

FrozenRose, you need to read more thoroughly before you reply on public forums.

LOL!

Totally agree. It wasn't believable in the slightest that everett was attracted to her..she had no likable qualities at all. The family were quite cool, but I got confused an awful lot in the beginning as to who was who. =)

If the audience would of liked the character, do you really think it would of been believable for the family to hate her? She was meant to come across like that. You can easily see why the family hate her, but throughout the film, you find out they are no better than her.

I loved Meredith because she wasn't the so-called outgoing etc. type of character. That's why while I love No Reservations; I love the original Mostly Martha better. I'd love to see more characters who are the types that people have to take time to get to know and the character changes, but not to become what everyone else thinks is outgoing etc., because it's not that person.

I have to disagree. I have a sister who can seem like Meredith; uptight and bitchy, and then once you see the real side of her (like Meredith in the bar), then you get her.

I thought Julie was so annoying. I was all like "you can take Julia and her stupid totem man beach story because she's too fricking earnest and BLAHHHHH". But I think this is because I "get" the Meredith character and so i found the instant like for Julie irritating.

Indeed, I agree that is the plot device, however, I found Julie to be the most annoying.

Julie. I don't know why but she just annoyed me; the way she waltzed in and everyone liked her and she didn't seem to support her sister much either.

But maybe I dislike Julie because I liked Meredith. I know we were supposed to dislike her but I felt sorry for her and warmed to her. She was only uptight because she's self-concious and wanted to fit in.

I can't believe no one else has named Thad as the most annoying! Oh my god, every scene with him pissed me off. He was just so catty and rude, with that cocky smirk on his smug face. Half the smack he said was to fit in with his sister and mother. Meredith had never done anything to him and he felt the need to mock her behind her back for trying to include him in a conversation by raising her voice.

If he could read lips or even make out enough words with his hearing aid, then he should have told her. Instead he just saracastically asked other people why she was yelling or simply smirked at her. And the scene where he is ring shopping with Everett? Didn't anyone else want to reach in the television and smack the back of his head? He had NO reason to dislike Meredith and even less of a reason to tell his brother not to marry her, but he insisted on trying to ruin the moment by pouting and glaring.

His character came across as completely spoiled and overindulged. I don't know if the actor was just trying to portray him that way, but he did it very well. For someone who acted as though everyone was supposed to accept for being gay and being in an interracial relationship, you'd think he be more accepting of others, especially those who have never done anything to him.

Yelling at deaf people is well known as a stupid and rude thing to do. He was perfectly within his rights to be 'catty' about it.

See the link below - myths about deafness - it's the fourth myth listed:

If I saw someone yelling at a deaf person, I would probably mock them, too. Meredith knows that he cannot hear and uses sign language to communicate. Even if he can read lips, what the hell would yelling do besides making herself look like an idiot?

And the scene where he is ring shopping with Everett, he tells him not to marry her because he can tell that his brother is trying to marry someone with whom he is not compatible just because their mom dying. Thad asks, "Is this about Mom?" and Everett replies, "Of course it's about Mom." He wasn't ruining the moment at all - Thad is being a good brother by telling Everett that getting married to the wrong person just so they can have a family wedding before their mom dies is not the right thing to do.

His character was nowhere near as spoiled and overindulged as Meredith (who gets away with insulting her boyfriend's family on Christmas Eve and then brother hopping so fast your head should spin), but in the end, he is much more respectful towards her than she is to him (I mean, she says some super ignorant stuff to him and Patrick in this movie).

reply

Ugh, Thad was the absolute worst! "Why is she yelling?" "Why is she crying?" "Don't look at me!" He would always speak 'about' someone, never 'to' them, as if they weren't even in the room.

I get that yell/speaking at a deaf person is rude, but I'm guessing Meredith didn't realize that.

I disliked Rachel McAdam's character - she just seemed unnecessarily bitchy. She had it in for Meredith from the onset and was the one who set the whole scene for everyone else to dislike her too.

I also disliked the mum, who started off rather likable but was really venomous to Meredith in the end.

Everett was not very likable either. I mean his attempts at supporting her were rubbish. If anything he should have gone out of his way to make her as comfortable as possible. He was really spineless.

I didn't dislike the SJP character. I thought the family's annoyance with her was over the top. I actually really liked her and felt for her. She tried.

reply

As much as I didn't like Meredith/SJP (and I don't like SJP in real life either...I find her completely irritating), I really couldn't stand Rachel McAdams' character...she was a complete b*tch. What...you find someone completely annoying just because they clear their throat a little bit? I thought that that was a little charming quirk of Meredith, actually. When she was nervous, she cleared her throat...big deal. It wasn't a big, disgusting, phlegm-filled throat clearing. Anyway, yes, I think Rachel M's character was a complete bit*h, and I hated her from beginning to end.

reply

I disliked Susannah. All she did was sitting around being pregnant.

reply

LMAO! that's funny.

reply

SJP was irritating but I think so was Rachael McAdams.

For me, Dianne Keaton's character and the gay couple (specially the white one) are most annoying.
Luke Wilson's is most likeable.
