One one the most underrated movies.....

It's so hard to understand why such an amazing movie like this has been cast aside. I mean this movie recieves no press at all even though it was without a doubt the best movie of 2002 by far.

It's like its been totally overlooked. It wasn't even included in Empire's 500 Greatest Movie list.

What a shame, hopefully over time this movie will pick up the recognation it truly deserves.

Definitely one of the most underrated films of all time, and yet, in my opinion, everything about it is fantastic!

What's even more shocking is that so many people loved American Beauty a film I absolutely loathe. RTP is such a rich story with Shakespearean type tragedy, and conflict. Two fathers, men who love each other, both protecting their sons. And the acting, the Art Direction and Cinemaphotography, the Costumes, Locations. But of course, since it has not sex in it, it's not worthy of praise. Mendes best film, to me.

I just can't understand why people overlook this film. However, I must say, I've only recently seen this. I was only 12 when it came out and shelved it as one of those movies that I'd have to wait to watch until I got older and could better understand it. (It was a personal choice, I knew damn well I the point would've passed me by had i watched it then).

I think this is the best Great Depression era Gangster film ever made. Better than The Untouchables.

I guess I just don't see it as a Gangster film

One of my favourites from this century. Of course I loved a lot of the Oscar winners, but even though I've only seen this movie once, and that was years ago, I never seem to have forgotten it. Totally underrated.

Same here, and I feel similarly about the director's prior film American Beauty - although some seem to consider it 'overrated' nowadays, I found it particularly moving. Admittedly Road To Perdition had slightly less of an emotional impact on me, but that was more than made up for by the engaging storyline, excellent performances and stunning cinematography. While I enjoyed both films on the big screen upon their initial release, I haven't seen either again since then; but they are definitely high on the list of titles to add in future to my currently pitifully small collection.

For me, while it is a strong A-, there aren't many sharp edges to it, if any.

It might be the first & only, charming gangster movie.

Its lack of bite probably keeps it from being mainstream memorable.

My reaction to Road to Perdition is that it's a study in technical virtuosity - beautifully photographed, perfect sound and a wonderful music score. The performances as well are pretty much spot on.

But emotionally, I feel almost nothing for it. It's as though the film thinks it achieves some emotional gravitas simply because it strives for it, and depth that is 'hinted at' is depth that may not be there at all. The photographic style is very clinical and sterile (Kubrick would have approved), and this helps to suck away any emotion that might have tried to bubble up. The almost absolute earnest seriousness of the whole thing if off-putting to me, as well. Only Dylan Baker's role injects any kind of humour into the thing. It NEVER hurts to be funny, no matter how serious a story considers itself to be.

These are purely my opinions and impressions, of course, and are probably 'wrong'.

One of the few properly rated movies. It's a 7/10.
