One one the most underrated movies.....

It's so hard to understand why such an amazing movie like this has been cast aside. I mean this movie recieves no press at all even though it was without a doubt the best movie of 2002 by far.

It's like its been totally overlooked. It wasn't even included in Empire's 500 Greatest Movie list.

What a shame, hopefully over time this movie will pick up the recognation it truly deserves.

I completly agree with you, this film is amazing

Best movie of 2002 by far?

City of God wants a word with you

city of god sucks realy bad, road to perdition is nr 1

Bought Road to Perdition on DVD in 2004, but I've never watched it. Was always in the believe it was some sort of boring star vehicle for Tom Hanks. So the DVD got ignored on the shelf for years.

But finally, today I've watched it the first time. With very low expectations.

Man, was I wrong. This movie is absolutely stunning. Magnificent scenery, great background soundtrack and some very memorable moments, like the one between a very suspicious Sullivan and a very creepy Maguire in the diner.

9 out of 10.

And my compliments to the directors commentary. Very informative.

reply

^^ deja vu haha I thought I was the only one to do that sort of thing! I've had the DVD for probably seven years or so, whenever it came out as such, and never opened or watched it until tonight. I love Tom Hanks and virtually everything he does but thought this would be just another father-son period piece movie and, too, didn't except much. However, it was fantastic and I loved it! Brilliant movie in all aspects. Tom Hanks was superb!

I've already seen the worst movie ever made, so it can only be uphill from there.

agreed

Why do you even post these things?

reply

You must have brain damage to think that.

reply

City of God sucks? I mean I can see if you said you didn't like it because it wasn't your thing.. but for you to say it sucks completely invalidates any opinion on any movie you ever have.

reply

"Twilight Samurai" & "Russian Ark" are better than both of those, but "Road To Perdition" is better than "City Of God"

You can't say Road to Perdition is a better film than City of God. You may prefer it, but that is your OPINION, you state it like it is fact. Ok, so you could say Road to Perdition is a better film than Alexander or XXX2, as everything about it is superior and that isn't really debatable, any idiot can see that. But films of the highest quality, like Road to Perdition and City of God, CANNOT be compared to which one is the better film, as they are similar in very few ways, and as they are of such high quality it is only opinion that can name one of them to be the superior film.

reply

He did just state his opinion: his opinion is that Perdition > City.

Oh yeah thanks, now that sticks gone I can finally sit down comfortably.

Good. You've learned something valuable today.

It's funny, I was looking at Sam Mendes' profile and I clicked on Road to Perdition and said to myself, "What an underrated movie!" Then I scroll down to the forums and see this.

I'm glad this thread was the first thread; I couldn't agree more.

"Road" is a masterclass in cinematic filmmaking. Everything from the direction, the writing, the acting is amazing. Cinematography is probably the best I've ever seen, editing is brilliant, and Thomas Newman's score is hauntingly beautiful.

Every aspect is top-class. Most definately an underrated gem.

reply

A very underrated classic this is indeed...but I can't say its the best movie of 2002...Adaptation and City of God came out that year...tough break

A truly breathtaking film that deserves to be acknowledged as a modern classic & a personal favourite of mine which makes it all the more sad for me that critics, magazines etc. don't give it its deserved recognition.

Beautiful cinematography, a brilliant score (especially the title track), quality acting and one of the greatest and emotionally-charged climatic scenes I have ever seen as Paul Newman bids us farewell with a tremendous departure!!!

Lets just hope that in the years to come it will become more popular as more and more people see it. It worked for the Shawshank Redemption and just look where thats placed on IMDb's top 250 movies list. 10/10

reply

Couldn't agree more with any of you.

This movie has never left my mind - the intelligence of this movie, in every aspect, is top notch. Even the title is one of the best ever!

Going to go watch it right now.

Did you hear that lovely piano duet Tom Hanks played with Paul Newman? And to look up and see the likes of Daniel Craig and Ciarán Hinds portraying in depth characters in a wonderfully created Prohibition Age gangster mansion is a delicious appetizer for what's about to come. Tom Hanks gave a captivating performance and his counter-foil Paul Newman gave his Irish Godfather persona the most wonderful and believable life. The manner in which they dealt with instilling empathy in the viewer for a heartless killer who has no concern for anybody, other than his immediate family, was the crux of the film and they handled it in a most sensitive fashion. The boy's love and admiration for his Dad was mitigated by his Mother's influence (played ever so tenderly by Jennifer Jason Leigh) that instilled a religious ethics in the boy that was in direct conflict with that of his father's, made necessary by the difficult economic times of the Great Depression. Every scene dealt with that ethical question differently, some humorously, some adventurous, and some dastardly. But by the time the Odyssey is complete and the wayfarers have arrived at their appointed destination, the moral ambiguities make you accept the punishment dealt to Hanks, the anti-hero and take pleasure in hearing the poetry of the young boy's tale of growing up as a consequence of the six weeks he spent on the road with his father in the winter of 1931. The poignanacy of the boy's narration was a very nice way to frame the overall picture we're lucky to enjoy as a different take of the gangster films of the Capone days in the cold Northern MidWest.

I hate to admit it, but I hadn't even heard of it until I saw it today.I think it's one of the best movies ever made.In fact, I'm sure I'll watch it agian.

4 reasons why i love this movie TOO much.. it's sam mendes' directing, paul newman's acting, thomas newman's haunting score, and last but definitely not the least, the main reason was because of Conrad L. Hall's beautiful and transcending cinematography..

reply

I agree RTP is a brillient film...but it's NOWHERE near the masterwork that is City of God!

I DARE you 2 say what he say's on a 1st date -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1XOfHax6Q8

reply

Yeah, would have to disagree with you there.

City of God is a brilliant film. Had the joy of finally watching it last week, and I think it was masterfully done. Acting was really good, and it was a great story.

But the cinematic presence and magnitute of ROAD is right up their with it. I'm not going to say it's "better", cause they're too similiar, but also very different (in terms of tone, setting, etc). Both are great films. But Road is just as much of a masterpiece as the masterpiece that is City of God! :)

reply

Can't argue with that. Both are perfect imo....

It has to be one of the most underrated of all time. This movie is a masterpiece. Personally, I think this movie is far more superior than similar movies such as Miller's Crossing or Reservoir Dogs, which by the way, are also superb.

reply

I just went throught empire's list of 500 greatest movies of all time too. absolutely ridiculous perdition didnt even make it on that. although i really didnt like that list, it's just further proof of just how underrated this movie is. hopefully, this movie will stand the test of time and get the recognition it deserves.

reply

Yeah, too bad Sam Mendes doesn't make simple and subtle, yet very beautiful film like this anymore...

reply

This is very underated. I think its an all time classic

Originally RTP was slated to be released in the fall of 2001 but got pushed back to summer 2002, July 12 to be exact, and we all know how hard it is to be serious during summer, so it kinda fell between the cracks. I kept raving about RTP that year and no one I talked to seem to have heard of it.

I think Bourne Identity was getting a lot of attention too.

i honestly could watch this movie so many times without getting the same, amazed and speechless impact. Its by far in my top ten

everything about it is just so superb, acting, music, cinematography.
and it won an oscar and so many other awards, yet its never shown on tv,
or even in the top movies of all times?

so yeah, its definitely underrated, the three actors they chose for it were absolutely amazing together, and everyone should see this movie.

One one the most underrated movies.....

i totally agree with the OP!... this is definitely the best film of 2002 (even though 'City of God' was very good to, but i find myself re-watching Road to Perdition MUCH more often. in fact, i still only seen City of God (8-9/10) once where as Road to Perdition i seen MANY times).

i give 'Road to Perdition' a 10/10, no less than a 9/10 for sure! it's a masterpiece and i don't fling that word around often either.

but it does seem like this film slipped under the radar on the mainstream level for some reason as not to many people seem to know about it unless you a movie fan like i am and others are on this site. because usually with actors like Tom Hanks that usually guarantee's it would be pretty well known but it seems like when people talk about Tom Hanks films this never comes into the picture when i personally think this IS his best film and he's had quite a few good/great ones.

It wasn't even included in Empire's 500 Greatest Movie list.

that's got to be a sad list. lol

here is the list http://www.empireonline.com/500/.

i am going over the list now and while there's a good percentage of those i have not seen some of the GREAT films are WAY TO LOW on there list. take 'Braveheart' (1995) for example which is #320 on there list. so according to them there is 319 BETTER films than that? , NOT A CHANCE. lol ... heck, even 'The Green Mile' (1999) is in #331 which is also a joke (it's far better). because in terms of 'pure entertainment etc' there's pretty much ZERO chance that there is THAT MANY films better than those two and i think ALOT of people would agree with me on that much. i am sure there's lots of others that i could find to but that should be enough to get the point across about there list being questionable because ill bet if you took 'regular people' and asked them what's some of there favorite movies it would be quite a bit different from the lists shown here especially if you sampled people in the age range of 50's or younger... but to be honest there would not even be 500 movies worthy of me claiming 'best movies of all time' level simply because out of the 1100-ish films i had seen there's only a fairly small percentage of that, that i rated higher than a 8/10.

because there's NO WAY there is 500 movies that are better than Road to Perdition out there. i would say it's unlikely there is even 100 in my eyes. but for me personally it would definitely be within my Top50-ish (most likely higher) of all time off the top of my head.

BUT... it does seem most of those 'best movies of all time lists' are based more around how they effected the movie industry/getting oscar's etc etc more than just being a great film. (not saying Oscar films can't be great but there's LOTS of great films that are blown off by those Oscar award type people)

but then again i have to recognize that EVERYONE's 'all-time lists' will vary at least some and i am sure the people who made that list seen quite a few more movies than i have.... i seen roughly 1100-1200 range myself based on looking at my 'Vote History' although some of my 1200+ stuff aint all movies but even then i should still be around 1100-ish of that that are solely movies. but even seeing the amount of 1100 or so that i seen, that still ain't no small number and gives me, in imho, more credibility (at least a little bit) vs someone who might have seen 50-75 films tops because from my perception, people who have not seen many movies (but have at least some interest in films) tend to be entertained easier vs someone who has seen a lot. i am not trying to sound arrogant or anything but i am being honest here as i think i make at least a decent argument.

but seriously... i think films prior to 1960-ish just plain ain't nearly as good as stuff in the last 20-40 years or so 'ON AVERAGE' especially when your looking at GREAT LEVEL (i.e. 9/10 or higher) films. because from my perception stuff prior to the 1960's just seems plain DATED in general. (i know there is exceptions but 'generally speaking' i think i make a very strong point)... because i don't think there is a single film i would personally rate higher than a 8/10 PRIOR TO 1960's (i will admit there's very few films i seen prior to the 1960's but it's mostly because, even if they turn out somewhat good, they just aint nearly as good as THE BEST stuff out there imho). because the oldest film i had seen that i am a pretty big fan of is 1961's 'The Hustler' with Paul Newman in it.

p.s. there is one film i am a huge fan of that i would consider a masterpiece in the 2000's along with 'Road to Perdition' and that is 'Lord of War' (2005) (10/10, this film got better with repeat viewings. i seen it many times now) ... as like i said before, each have solid cinematography and great music that fits the film perfectly etc etc. those are two of the few films since 2000 to date i would consider a masterpiece myself as they have the 'art' side to them besides just being a great film.
