i remember some people asking at the time "why didn't they bring a cell phone with them?"

Then someone would point out "because it takes place in 1994!" But even in 1999, it's not far-fetched. I think certain movies and TV shows at the time made cell phones seem more common than they were.

I don't remember anyone having a cell phone in 1994. They certainly existed but it must have been these expensive big ass things that were bigger than walkie-talkies.

I'm trying to remember when my parents got theirs and the best I can do is the beginning of the 2000s.

Could have been that they were too pricey for college students. After all, Josh had to borrow the equipment he brought to begin with, it's not like they could afford their own.

Added to that, had they owned their own phones they might not have bothered to bring them anyway, the connectivity issues would have made it pointless and who would want to bring their big clunky expensive phones that would not only be useless, but unnecessary for what was supposed to be a brief "scouted out" project?

reply

Yeah, they couldn't have afforded it, might not have known anybody to borrow it from, and wouldn't have felt they needed them in '94, in which phone culture wasn't so much a thing.

reply

Even if they did, there were not very many cell towers so they wouldn't have had service out in the woods anyway.

The movie takes place before the cell phone boom. Even in 1999 only like 15-20% of people had them.

Just for the sake of argument let’s say that they did have access to a cell phone. They were unlikely to get service in the middle of the woods. If remote area that still can be a problem even today. There is also nowhere to charge it. The phone would’ve died by the end of the first day.

reply

Absolutely. We probably just would've been treated to a few scenes of them trying to call somebody with no luck. At best, we'd get a couple creepy moments of strange noises or unsettling voices calling them, or a nighttime scene where they're trying to hide and the cell phone rings.

Even if they had been available, cellphone's NEVER work when you need them to in horror movies!
