Why did the Ceniza brothers forge the page?

Its been a while since I last saw this film but something has been nagging me about this one plot point.

At the end, Corso discovers that the ninth engraving is a forgery and returns to Spain to confront the Ceniza brothers about it. When he arrives, they are gone but the original engraving is discovered.

Was that page damaged? It makes sense that they forged the page in order to restore a damaged book to "Perfect" condition (they even mention that as a reason to do so in an earlier scene) but, if I remember correctly, that page was just fine and held the correct engraving. That means that the Ceniza brothers not only copied an engraving from the other 2 books (and changed the signature to "LCF") while still having the original engraving in their possession.

Why?

I believe they forged the false page so as to act as a facilitator of sorts, to ensure that the individual who gained access to the ninth gate was worthy to do so.

Seconded. The Cenizas were ensuring that only the elite of the elite - the most dedicated of seekers - found the secrets of the ninth gate.
