Why wasn’t the movie “Blade” considered as much of a big deal as “Black Panther”?
“Blade” was the first big budget, mainstream superhero movie with an African-American as the lead role.

Wokeism didnt exist yet. Talking about Black Panther as the first black superhero movie was all Disney marketing
shareMAGIC JOHNSON WAS MY HERO GROWING UP...I NEVER THOUGHT ONE THING ABOUT WESLEY SNIPES BEING A BLACK LEAD...WOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT IT WITH CHADWICK EITHER...HAD I NOT HEARD ABOUT IT A THOUSAND TIMES...WEIRD CULTURE WE LIVE IN THESE DAYS.
shareWow, is this post real?
Kowalski saying something negative about the woke culture?
Your troll personality wasn't defined yet, 2 years ago, I see.
This is 100% exactly how I feel.
My friends and I were all huge Wesley Snipes fans and saw Blade opening night, Snipes being black was not something we even thought about, and if someone had brought it up, I would've looked at them like they were complete weirdos.
Agreed. There was a tv show that was...not bad... that I enjoyed. Only lasted a season unfortunartely. Would recommend if you can find it.
shareWITH STICKY FINGAZ...YEAH...THE SHOW WAS DECENT.
shareHoly crap I forgot all about the show....I need to rewatch that sometime. I remember it being OK.
OMG this just reminded me that there was a Crow TV show staring Marc Dacascos walking around during the day dressed like the Crow lol.
I remember that show being terrible lol.
I DON'T THINK I EVER SAW THE CROW SHOW...DID YOU EVER WATCH THAT SEQUEL THEY DID EDWARD FURLONG AND TARA REID?🫤
shareLOL I own that piece of crap dvd. It's horrible. I watched it once when I bought it and never again.
shareANYONE WHO SAYS I LIKE AND OR BUY EVERYTHING...THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING THAT I DON'T WANT OR NEED...I SAW FURLONG AND REID ON THAT COVER AND I KEPT WALKING...I NEVER HAVE WATCHED IT...IT SEEMS TO HAVE KILLED THE CROW SERIES AS WELL.
shareI totoally missed it. Sounds like not worth watching. I might check on youtube for some clips for amusement's sake.
shareWhen I was growing up I never once looked at a persons skin on screen. I watched Blade when it was released and not once did I think "oh wow the first black superhero". It was just "oh wow, snipes kicks ass" and as I grew up I came to realise how perfectly cast he was as Blade.
Nowadays due to MSM and Twitter all we see is colour as it is pushed every single time for all sorts of reasons. It is being pushed as someones defining factor and nothing else matters except the colour of their skin.
It is the same with sexuality, gender and all the other thins that really no one cares about except the people pushing it.
We are not progressing, we are regressing.
IT'S THE SAME WORLD...THE DIFFERENCE IS SOCIAL MEDIA/INTERNET.
share'I never once looked at a persons skin on screen. I watched Blade when it was released and not once did I think "oh wow the first black superhero". It was just "oh wow, snipes kicks ass" and as I grew up I came to realise how perfectly cast he was as Blade.'
Exactly.
Probably because Blade is dark, violent, rated R and is more of a cult movie. Whereas Black Panther is more accessible and grossed a billion dollars and was nominated for Oscars/whatever.
shareThis, plus the fact that Blade is not a superhero. He may be a comic book character, but he's a vampire hunter. It's a vampire movie, not a superhero movie.
shareBecause nobody was obsessed with race back then.
You had Blade, You had Hancok and you had others as well. As someone already said: I didn't go to see Blade because Snipes is black but because Snipes is Snipes...

Actually Spawn was. Released 1 year prior.
shareIf we want to get technical, even though it was a comedic take on the genre, The Meteor Man in 1993 is the first film I'm aware of to have a black lead as a superhero.

I think that one of the differences is that while Blade did have Snipes as the lead, that wasn't uncommon. Sure it was a black superhero, but much of the supporting cast was white. It's been a while, but Blade, his girlfriend, and his mother were African American, but I think almost everyone else was white. Maybe an Asian in there.
Black Panther, on the other hand, had a huge cast and I think there were only 3 white characters? I don't think there had been a big budget film, let alone a superhero film in the American market with an African American cast before. Especially not one that grossed as much as Black Panther did.
