How can people like this movie

Seriously what is soo special about this film. It's a watered down version of star wars..

But seriously nominated for an oscar??? Why wasn't battleearth nominated for one?
It was soo much better?

Please tell me what makes this film great? I thought Dogma was better .

I'd like to "big-badda-boom" all over your godawful post.

5th element is not a watered down version of any movie I've ever seen and by my count I've seen 10,000.Including every sci-fi movie since the 50's!!This is fun , original script idea, good acting by those who can act and a fun villain! What the F(&(&*^< do young people want???? Why don't you create a movie or write a script or a song instead of blasting o.p.'s stuff?????? E.T.

reply

Certainly not Oscar material, and I didn't even like it as much as Judge Dredd.

But it is an unusual, entertaining movie with good actors, and most importantly Mila, you shouldn't have any problem why many viewers would like this movie.

Now put your pomposity in a corner somewhere, and think about the movie as a product, and not a piece of art.

Short Cut, Draw Blood

According to your logic, Star Wars are NOT classics as well!!!

reply

I guess they are classics, but so is '400 Blows', and you couldn't pay me to watch any of them.

For me, this film is 100x better than Star WArs and most of our modern overrated trash like The Avengers, THe Dark Knight etc.

reply

I liked The Avengers, basically because I've been a fan of The Hulk's for over 50 years

It's a great movie because it has action, humor, science-fiction, romance, adventure and suspense, all at the same time.
It's top-notch popcorn entertainment.

To me it's actually the main flaw of this movie. It tries to be too much at the same time. It's an action movie but the action scenes I thought were badly filmed. It tries to be funny but come on. Chris Tucker dressed like a woman and screaming the whole time ? That's not funny, that's irritating. Not to mention the terrible Milla Jovovich and all the cringe-worthy scenes (boom, badaboom etc...). Plus, and that may sound mean, but I don't find her attractive at all. Bony, masculine, yuck... The "perfect woman" ? I very much doubt it.
The dialogues are either flat and unimaginative or completely nonsensical, and the ending is an orgasm of ineptitude.

I must say the only intersting element of this movie was Zorg, played by the always great Gary Oldman.

I felt the same way. But I just forced myself to open my mind and watch. It is the most ridiculously funny movie ever, populated by a silly symphony of characters.

It was so insane It grew on me. I dont belive it took me over twelve years from its release to see this movie, but when it came out cheap and remastered, I said what the hey and have love it ever since.

In essence, YES!

I love this film it is brilliant, just sheer madness and fun.. what more can you want? I could watch it to the end of days.

It's just good fun all around.

You-want-some-more?

Until reading this thread I never really thought about it, but technically I suppose The 5th Element is space fantasy and not sci-fi. Which may be why now, almost 20 years after it first screened you can watch it and not constantly roll your eyes at the tech. If you can get over that it really is a "fun" movie to watch. It's visually pleasing (in a word "supermodels")and has some action, some romance, some skin and some laughs. A solid 7 by any standards.

I didn't even know it was somewhat a cult classic until recently. It's pretty fun, sure, but I'm not going to compare it to any sci-fi classics.

My opinion,

Residing the great acting, storyline, and one-liners:

I have to say that The Fifth Element was actually the most exact representation of the future.

No no, bear with me here. Forgetting about the aliens, most movies regard the future as either post-apocalyptic, Brave New World-ish (culture-less), or extremely totalitarian.

But what about a future that's exactly like today, except with flying cars? The government is the same, we still have the same cultures, and we have also get cigarettes that literally tell you to quit smoking!

I don't know, but that's why I loved this movie.

reply

That's exactly how I see this movie, a true representation of how our future could be (if we don't blow our selves up first) things seem to be getting crazier every day so It's not hard to imagine a future where everything is completely off the wall bonkers.
