Did anyone else fall asleep during this film?

For me, this film started really well and I was drawn in. However it let itself down badly in the last 40 minutes or so. It became painfully and unwatchably slow. So much so that I fell asleep in parts.

Towards the end I just wanted it to be over. I know someone may reply to this and say something along the lines of "you just don't appreciate art house cinema" but there are slow-moving, engaging films and there are films that are just boring. This was the latter.

All I Can say friends

That its about what you enjoy on screen.
As they say 'You have to read between the Lines'
Similarly here 'You have to view between the scenes'

If you dont like the intricate and subtle details of human nature captured scene by scene, then you wont enjoy this movie.

Well if your eyes cannot handle visual splendor then you might not like this movie.

Only a master filmmaker like Wong Kar Wai can demonstrate the ephemeral nature of True Love on Screen.

So if you like information spoon fed to you in movies, then you wont like this movie.

but if you enjoy watching the growth of characters bit by bit,
If you want to watch the the transient emotions shown by genuine characters
If you want to feel the ambiance around the characters.

In an Idiosyncratic manner, then this movie wont disappoint.

No need to be condescending. It's ok to admit it's a tediously sloooooow movie.

Define what constitutes a 'slow' or a 'fast' LABELER

reply

I found it extremely boring, too. I ALMOST fell asleep. It's a miracle I contrived to watch it till the end!

reply

I did the same. Willed my way to the end. I hardly ever have that problem.

Disappointed that this film let me down.

Well at least I know what to get my insomniac friends

Glad to see someone made a thread about this

~What if this is as good as it gets?!~

reply

I too ..i dont know why such high rating for this ??

reply

I normally don't like slow films, but this was pretty good. 7/10

reply

Define slow. Perhaps it is not the film that is boring. Perhaps it is your ability to engage with beautifully executed and truthful drama, shot in the most strikingly original way? Perhaps you were tired? Never mind - I hear they are making Die Hard 5 any time now!

reply

For me, it was painful to watch. And I have seen so many films of David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, even Antonioni, which I didn't find so boring as this

one of the best films ive ever seen

I did fall asleep at times the first two times I watched it. It IS very languid and slow paced. But I fell asleep because of MY shortcomings, not the film's. The third time I watched it I was mesmerized the entire time.

I was tired when I first tried to watch it, so I fell asleep after ten minutes. I tried to watch it again from the beginning after I was properly rested, and I didn't fall asleep but I was bored the whole way through. The love story plot is very thin and it feels like every single scene is drawn out forever. After twenty to thirty minutes of this I realised I didn't care in the slightest about Su and Chow's love affair, but I continued watching it to the end.

The art direction and photography are both beautiful, but they can't save a boring film, it just ends up feeling like a photography exhibition.

It's expected in a Wong Kar Wai movie. Almost everything is subtle. Tony Leung & Maggie Cheung did a great job potraying their respective roles.

When i focused on the story, i was so confused at first. I kept on waiting for something to happen, like an affair between the two of them or something, but major really happened. After awhile, i just gave up and enjoy the visuals, the beautiful music, the subtle acting...It was beautiful ...
