Did anyone else fall asleep during this film?

For me, this film started really well and I was drawn in. However it let itself down badly in the last 40 minutes or so. It became painfully and unwatchably slow. So much so that I fell asleep in parts.

Towards the end I just wanted it to be over. I know someone may reply to this and say something along the lines of "you just don't appreciate art house cinema" but there are slow-moving, engaging films and there are films that are just boring. This was the latter.

The first time I tried to watch it I fell asleep. The second time I fast forwarded through the parts where no one was talking, which was a LOT of the movie. A lot of nothing happened. I wasn't even sure if they had ever had sex. One of the deleted scenes shows them taking off thier clothes. She didn't get very far, then said, "I can't." I think she wanted to, but couldn't bring herself to commit adultery. He sure wanted to though.
So, this is a so-so movie. Reminds me of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," which is exactly what the title says it is.

Think of the title, which is a hint. If you think dialogue is the only form of substance or communication, then you've missed a lot of great movies. As much of the characters' feelings are revealed by the silences as well as the words. And the movie creates a beautiful mood that's tense and languished at the same time.

You fast-forwarded through the reasons people love this film.

And I love Much Ado About Nothing, too. I think it's one of his best, and not just of the comedies.

reply

I didn't fall asleep because I watched it during the day, but I would probably have if I had watched it at night.

I'm glad I watched it, but I have to say I ended up being bored and wanting it to be over.

I also found it a bit difficult to follow sometimes, may be something in the scenes transitions made it not so pleasant for me to watch..

The film is without doubt, fantastic. My issues lie in the exposition being very drawn out, and the overall film was quite slow. Other than that, a good film and great idea for sure!

Wouldn't surprise me if some people fell asleep watching this film. The details are very very subtle, if you are not able to pick up those subtle details, you won't get to feel the tension in this film. For me, then tension was intense.

Masterpiece.

MASTERPIECE!

This movie is just perfect, Tony leung and Maggie Cheung play their role at the perfection. It's hard for me to explain in english how i feel when i watching "In The Mood For Love", like 'ring911' said "The details are very very subtle" Yeah, the movie is slowly but it is perfect like that.

The Mise en scène was magnificent. it was so relaxing that i feel asleep twice. But when i was done with my nap i wanted it to be over.

This is not a knock on the film. it thought it was great. too bad i don't understand the native language and had to rely the subtitles for translation.

A story always takes place - for a great part - in the mind of the audience. This film is an extreme example of that. How much conflict and action you see depends on your ability (and willingness) to interpret the things you see. Which is sometimes very little indeed, but at the same time so much.

Tony's "thinking face" for example - as an earlier poster called it - can be quite boring if you don't put any effort into understanding his thoughts and feelings at that moment. A lot of the drama in this story - and there is a lot of drama to be found - is left to any ones interpretation. Therefore you're almost forced to literally participate in the story.

Also, you're more likely to identify with the main characters if you've been through some *beep* yourself in your life. Not to say you haven't - I don't know any of you - but it helps.

I don't think you're alone there, I found that a friend of mine who is a big Wong Kar Wai fan also fell asleep to the movie, while I on the other fell in love with him even more : )

I guess opinions varies, but I do see the 'bore' factor in the long and dragging scenes, yet I think that was what made me want to pay attention to it more, see what happens at the end of that particular scene. And I have to disagree when you say the last 40 minutes where painful and unwatchable. I mean that ending shot of Tony Leung's character in Angkor Wat was such an enigmatic shot, with the help of the scoring of course. That's what I think anyways.

It's really slow and the same thing repeating over. I dozed off 3 or 4 times.
