Never liked this movie....

I only saw it one time, and I just remember how incredibly cruel and evil the people in it were, and the things they did were beyond disturbing. The scene with the vice was so upsetting. But the absolute worst was....the scene in the desert where they made Joe Pesci's character watch while they beat his brother to death. It broke my heart, and I was upset by it for quite a while.

I don't know how people can watch this and feel entertained, and want repeat viewings. Heck, I can get through some pretty grisly things. And some horror movies (like Halloween and Jaws) are among my all-time favorites. I suppose it's the evil that men can actually be capable of doing that is more terrifying than anything else.

Yeah I agree they ramped up the violence compared to Goodfella's..I thought it was horrible when Pesci's character viciously stabbed that guy in the neck where he was wheezing and gurgling. Not Scorsese's best IMHO.

Casino is probably my favourite Scorsese. The brutal violence contrasts brilliantly with the glitzy Vegas setting.

Scorsese is fascinated by sinners, and he is a master of these stories of evil men who park their morality for the rush of pleasures of the gangster lifestyle, but in the end karma catches up with them.

I love how he seduces you into their world, but then makes you watch the awful consequences. Riveting filmmaking. Characters like De Niro’s Sam are interesting because he’s a sinner with many admirable qualities.

If you grew up sheltered then this type of movie isn't for you. I saw your post in "The Irishman" message boards and you seem to have the same reaction. Most people who lived in this era or are familiar with elements from it tend to appreciate it more.

the violence(I'll agree it was a tad much)probably happened in real life, although the corn field scene apparently did not. It took me a few times to appreciate this film, after seeing the superior Goodfellas.

The corn field scene was abridged from the actual events. Tony Spilotro and his brother (Nicky and his brother Dom in the movie) were actually beaten, tortured and mutilated in a house basement then their bodies dumped in a cornfield.

I'm attempting to watch it now for the first time. WHAT A CHORE. Actually I've been attempting to watch it for the past four days now but can't take it for more than 20-30 minutes at a time. I'm nearly two hours in now and so far it's been nothing but meandering, arguing, bickering, F-bombs and Joe Pesci's ANNOYING-ass voice. Movies are supposed to be entertaining but slogging through this thing is like pulling teeth. I don't know why I torture myself like this.

IMO Goodfellas is the best gangster film of them all. It redefined what a great film of that genre meant. It was quite the task then to one-up Goodfellas with Casino, a movie in the same genre. IMO he laid it on too thickly in this endeavor and ruined it. I agree with the OP.

I've only seen it a few times because I find it entirely too real and disturbing. But it's a brilliant film. I've noticed lately that movie articles are finally starting to praise and hold it up in equal measure with Goodfellas and Godfather and what not. Always felt, especially at the time, that it was something of a cash grab picture. But its aged wonderfully I think.

That's a Scorsese movie for you. Zero warmth, just cold and mean spirited characters.

No matter how well made his films are (and they are expertly directed), nothing can make up for a film with no soul.

I agree ,Even as a teenager I grew weary of these mafia thugs torturing each other movies during the spat of them when this
one came out .

I made a brief return and ended up watching another one last night "State of Grace" 1991 . Same shit
wont be going back again anytime soon

I'm not buying the "you werent there man" type replies above. I'm old enough for "the period" i still dont wanna see it on my screen.
