Is this when Star Trek movies began to suck?

Or did it start with ST III?

reply

ST is best enjoyed as a TV show.

Movies are always meant to attract a wider audience, that's why Picard suddenly becomes an action hero and the Borg collective has suddenly a queen.

reply

Yep - triple the action, downgrade the intelligence - and you have a movie on your hands.
This is what happens to every TV series that tries to monetize itself through films.

reply

It's about habing fun

reply

Well STIII is one of the best (imo, and reviews were decent at the time), it could be argued it started from the outset with TMP ..but at least it was epic scifi directed by Robert Wise and it resurrected the franchise..

I guess it'd have to be Trek V when they officially 'began to suck' as it was critically lambasted and most fans hated it .. then VI was back to the standard of II, III, IV (obviously bc it was written and directed by the Trek II guy), then VII was a letdown/kind of sucked, VIII was great again, then IX and X both sucked.. then the JJ films pretty much either sucked or didn't depending on fans/audiences. hardcore fans pretty much felt they sucked, casual fans/moviegoers thought they were good (imo XI was an epic reboot/resurrected the franchise like TMP, ID was big budget fun alt universe version of II, but Beyond sucked!)

reply

III (The Search for Spock) didn't suck. V (The Final Frontier) was the first Star Trek movie to really suck.

reply

I wouldn't say V really sucked. Funnily enough, it's biggest problem is the same as this one - The running about among some rocks ending.

Both were pretty cheap and not exactly cinematic. Ironically both would have looked right at home on episodes of TOS.

V is the only ST movie I've ever enjoyed.

When they blew up the Klingon homeworld and the klingons needed our help to survive, imo, that is when the movies "jumped the shark".

Though the entire original series the klingons had an EMPIRE that was a real threat to the Federation. That this EMPIRE suddenly was retro conned away so that the klingons just had one planet, or at least just one major planet, was...

stupid beyond belief. The laziest sort of writing that retroactively ruined dozens of class episodes by changing their environment after the fact.

reply

It wasn't even a the Klingon homeworld that blew up, it was just some moon that had important energy facilities or something.

OMFG, Corbell, don't be such an ignorant asshole. They specifically say it was a Klingon MOON that exploded, named Praxis. Yeah, if it was in the homeworld's orbit, it most likely would've done massive environmental harm, as I think they mentioned also.

What ARE you talking about? Where did they EVER say it was "just one planet"? The homeworld OF the Empire? Why mention all the other outlying worlds?

"stupid beyond belief. The laziest sort of writing that retroactively ruined dozens of class episodes by changing their environment after the fact."

You severely lack a lot of information, apparently. Nerd information, for sure, but still information. Unless you don't WANT to be seen as a nerd? Funnily enough, many DO these days.

reply

Moon, planet, the point is that the Klingons had a freaking EMPIRE. They would have had DOZENS, if not HUNDREDS of major or at least significant worlds to move their homeworld population to, without needing help from the Feds.

Retro conning that, shit canned so much of cannon.

What are you on about? There are TEN Star Trek movies made altogether long before that Abrams abomination in 2009.

ST III is known as The Search for Spock, in case you didn't know.

In my personal opinion, the Trek movies started to suck with Nemesis, because Data was MURDERED and because it just felt very off compared to the previous wholesome movies.

reply

LOL - Search For Spock? Sucked?!! 😂

reply

III actually has some good moments in it.
