I can't believe some people think that this is not a good performance by Streep! First of all, I have never seen Meryl Streep give a sub par performance in any movie. I don't think The River Wild is her best or anything but her talent is total evident from every scene!
Secondly, what about the part where Wade tells the group he's killed Tom, and her face is perfectly rigid, but you can see her utter loathing underneath. And especially her line, "I'm going to kill you Wade." It was just chilling, I totally believed that she would kill him. And her baiting him to rape her, the way she snarls, "Just show me." Very good acting, and I don't know how anyone could disagree.
PS, another poster mentioned a scene that is shown in acting classes across the country where meryl is talking about icebergs? I don't remember that scene at all. when does she talk about icebergs?
I beg to differ. I think she was great. The scene where she's baiting Wade to harm her was BRILLIANT. When she says, "I'm going to kill you," I believed her 100%. The look she gave him was so great.
When she talks about the gauntlet and is laughing, then pulls back and begins to cry...great acting. I thought it was a great choice to laugh through that monologue. A lot of actors wouldn't have done that.
It's not one of her most profound roles, but I think that's due to the character and the script. She did what the script called for and, I'll bet, did it better than anyone else could have.
i thought she was gret in this movie. One thing that it was not about hardcore acting, all about action and taking risk. And she did it all by herself. No tricks no visual effects while those scenes were really risky. She worked her body out, did all scenes without using any tricks. This is pretty dedicated and amazing.
Definitely one of the occasions when she was 'not' deserving of a nomination (that she seems to receive just about each time she bothers to show up on screen). Overall solid, but indeed, as the OP says, there were moments when she struggled to convince.
I didn't like how she was unable to react. I keep telling myself maybe some people in shock tend to do that, but I just didn't like her performance much.
What's funny is I saw a movie recently, I forget which one, where the whole time I thought "it looks just like they are acting to the camera" and it had great reviews, while this one felt real and now here you are saying her performance was bad. lol.
