Why is she whispering to K. Bacon about the absurd idea of tackling the "gauntlet" when all in the boat can hear her. It seems like she's offering an additional level of empowerment by being close to him AND unnecessary for effect. Didn't make sense to me.
No, she didn't. She only did the milder river sections; the major whitewater stunts were performed by Kelley Kalafatich. Tragically, in 2007, Kalafatich became paralyzed from the waist down from inflammation of her spinal cord, caused by a condition known as transverse myelitis.
While I would be the first to say this is by no means her best role, she proves once again that she has so much range. Though Sophie's Choice will always be my favorite MS movie I still find her ability to play any character in any situation outstanding...All these young actors could certainly learn alot from her as an ARTIST.
She was amazing in this movie.......when she got in Wade's face and told him exactly what she thought of him, well that was one of my favourite parts! And as for her physique.......all i can say is WOW, those arms especially!
This is one of my favourite Meryl films ever.
"Did you fall down and smack your little head on the pavement?"
I enjoyed this film. Remember that some obnoxious critics, like Pauline Kael had accused her of only "acting from the neck up." She later took on some more physical roles and comedies for which these same critics ripped on her. I liked the physicality of her in this movie. To respond to that crusty Kael, isn't it the best actors who can carry their roles from only the neck up? Think of her early movies and her acting ability left nothing to be criticized for, but duly commended. I enjoyed this movie and most of her films. The ones I have not enjoyed as much were never due to her performance but to poor script/execution by the directors (Still of the Night, Before & After).
I can think of no actress, alive or dead, who could replicate meryl Streep's work as well. This includes Katherine Hepburn, Maggie Smith, Bette Davis, Kate Winslet, Cath Blanchett, who I also appreciate. While all good, they do not have her range of ability.
Yeah I loved her in this. I still havent seen the movies she won Oscars for (Sophie's Choice & Kramer VS Kramer). I really havent seen much of her at all really.. (Devil Wears Prada, Mama Mia, Doubt, The Deer Hunter...). But her performance in The River Wild is the main reason why I like this movie
She pulled off "mom" PERFECTLY. Her insane adrenaline to save the life of her child.
The best part (of hers) in the movie (and its like a milli-second long) is the look on her face when Wade first slaps the father. Up till then, Wade was all talk and Gail even tried to intervene. But at that moment, the look on her face is KNOWING these guys mean business and are going to take them hostage and/or hurt them. Its a look of sheer fear. I always picture what is going thru Gails head is "O SHYT!" LoL
Definitely NOT a good performance, she was not very convincing. Meryl can be GREAT sometimes ( The Bridges of Madison County ) but that's not the case in here. Katharine hepburn said she could see the wheels turning: I agree. If there's anyone who should have been nominated for a golden globe, it would be David Strathairn (what a wonderful and underrated actor). Kevin was good too, at least he did his best with the silly script.
And anyway this film was a little bit entertaining but pretty mediocre overall.
Meryl Sheep was totally omg awsome in the movie. She was 45 at the time, and totally owned the role. I cant believe she got into such great shape and gained such a knowledge of rafting. Of course that's to be expected cuz she always studies her roles for accuracy. IE that violin movie, Music from the Heart, and tons of others.
Honestly she was so fun to look at in The River Wild. Woah, she was in awesomeness shape with toned legs and arms etc, totally looked the part of a middle aged extreme sport MILF. The story coulda been a but smoother, but still. It's rare to see Oscar-level acting in an action movie; it just doesnt happen that way, so you shouldnt take away anything from her acting in TRW. But considering it is to date her only "action" film, Meryl rocked this movie! And Kev Baconator did as well!
