Seems to me that if you think the first is the best then you are a different kind of Evil Dead fan. Not a bad thing necessarily. The slapstick and everything but the kitchen sink bombast of 2 and 3 is what makes these movies stand above any other horror trilogy, or most other trilogies for that matter.
II... WITHOUT QUESTION. ;)
Funnier than #1, the chicks are hotter, the 3 stooges gags are better. And the animated skeleton army gets a bit tiresome in AOD.
Any movie that has the stones to simply start the same story over is -shameless-! I love it. :D

1. The Evil Dead (a cinematic masterpiece, great camera work etc.)
2. Evil Dead II (The effects, the basic story and plot telling, horrorcomedy at it's finest)
3. Army of Darkness (Love the effects/stop motion use, cult like comedy. good acting)
Army of Darkness is good and funny so
I rank them:
1. The first Evil Dead.
...and then you can quit because I don't like the other two at all. They're comedies, and that's not what I came for. But, I admittedly don't like horror comedies in general. Not a fan of Sean of the Dead, either.
It really depends on what you want to watch. All 3 movies are really different. But I have to say I admire the original the most because of all the improvisation and hard work they did on such a small budget and for little pay; it's easy to see why it's admired by so many horror/slasher directors.
