Evil Dead 2
I never really thought ED2 was that funny, but I enjoyed Army of Darkness a lot more. I also think the first Evil Dead is an excellent stand-alone horror film.

I'm pretty much the same.
The Evil Dead for me is a masterpiece of film-making.
Yes it's cheesy, yes the acting is terrible, yes the effects are "poor" and yes the plot is cliché.
But it's still a masterpiece. Proof one does not need millions up on millions of $'s to create an engaging and entertaining flick.
Even more so, I love all the behind the scenes info this all adds to the wonder of The Evil Dead.
The fact it was a "student" film, just a few friends that loved film-making and just wanted to make a film. Sam was only 19 when he started this film...19! Most 19 year olds these days can't even make a cup of coffee, nevermind a feature film.
Even today when I look at Sam's camera work in this flick...it's still amazing, and for most part it was just him holding a cheap handheld camera. Yet some of the effects he pulled off were stunning. He and Hitchcock are the 2 directors that REALLY impress me with their use of basic camera work. Can't think of anoyone else that has come close to those 2.
All the love and passion behind the scenes is seen on the screen too.
For "a bunch of kids"...they (Sam, Bruce and Bob) did a stunning job.
Evil Dead II.
It's fun, it's goofy...it's slightly dissapointing.
I have a problem with sequels that detract from the previous style. Terminator 2, Gremlins 2, etc. While I still enjoy the films, I still need to ask, why the change in direction? If it ain't broke...
Sam still surprised me with some of his directing here and again came up with some original ideas...but it was not as "pleasing" as it was in the first flick.
As a sequel, it's one of the better ones. But it also felt "toned down" in favour of humor.
Army Of Darkness...there is a film I love and hate in equal meassure.
Let's be honest, it's NOT Evil Dead...far from it.
But hey, when the studio demand Sam change his original concept (The Medievil Dead), change the script, the characters and the ending. You won't have an Evil Dead flick.
AoD works for me as a stand alone picture. It's just a goofy adventure flick.
It's not Evil Dead III.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he is God.

Agree, there's something really charming about low budget student films. Early years are the best period of every director's lifetime, because they are full of original ideas and have a huge desire to make films. You can see their passion in their films even if it's full of cliches and plot is a bit stupid.
When they become famous and rich enough, it looks like they stop carrying (and then they usually get fat). I think that there's not that much work for a director in making a high budget film, because you can hire someone to do a big part of your job. Plus, money investors and Hollywood companies are bitching all the time and you can't make the movie the way you want.
Sure, there are many high budget movie directors who have full control over their films, but that doesn't change the point that with time most of them get lazy and no longer that dedicated to cinema.
I didn't really like The Evil Dead that much (and I haven't seen the sequels yet), but I definitely agree - it is a masterpiece.

Sh*t... I am 19 right now... And what did I created? ... Nothing...
Now I really have no rights in criticizing his films.
