Of the 11 Star Trek cinema films made so far, what 2 or 3 films, are your current favorite ones and please separately say why, for each fave Trek cinema film named (as in for the film's better script, the acting, direction, FX, or a combo of all of these or any other factors).
Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier because they're the closest in spirit to the TV series. Others are more exciting, or simply have better scripts or better direction, but those two feel the most like Star Trek to me.
Star Trek IV is my fav followed by Kahn (hating the killing of Spock at end. I knew he was coming back) and then Undiscovered Country (watching it right now).
Completely agree that Kahn is one of the greatest villians of all time.
The other original films in order are III, I, and V.
Just rewatched V and remembered how bad it is. After the incredible success of IV, I still can't believe that the script for V was ever approved.
I was never a big fan of TNG. First Contact was ok. The others were so bad, I could not even make it to the end.
I was amazed that the TNG movies were so bad, since the series finale of TNG was fantastic.
1. my #1 favorate ST movie is the undiscovered country. i'm always a sucker for political intrigue and whodunit mysteries plus it was a nice and fitting tribute and farewell to the original crew.
2. the wrath of kahn comes in as my 2nd favorate ST movie behind UC. one of the main reasons to like ST movies is for the action and battle scenes and this one certainly exceled in that department
1) Wrath of Khan: simply great. I liked that it actually moved beyond TOS, unlike TMP which was basically an episode of the series stretched into a two hour movie. The characters are older and different, which fits with their physical appearance. You actually watch Kirk deal with the consequences of what you saw before; whereas the series would have him beat a different villain and sleep with a different woman in each episode and just move on, in the movie, a villain and a woman from his past both come back with earth-shattering consequences. And it sets into motion events that take another two movies to sort themselves out.
2) The Undiscovered Country. Not the best Star Trek movie, but the perfect sendoff. Like others here, I love the whodunit and the political intrigue. It was the perfect thing to go out on: it resolves one of the oldest conflicts in Star Trek (the Klingon/Federation cold war), while doing social commentary on a timely, hugely important real-world development, and handling it with classic Trekkie optimism and faith in a better future.
There's a plan in everything, kid. And I love it when a plan comes together!
Oh, and speaking of which, it also has one of the best lines of dialogue in the ST universe;
Valeris: "Do you not recognize that a turning point has been reached in the affairs of the Federation?" Spock: "History is replete with turning points, Lieutenant. You must have faith." Valeris: "Faith?" Spock: "That the universe will unfold as it should." Valeris: "Is faith logical?" Spock: "Logic? Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris: not the end."
I know there are fans and even some of the cast who feel that the movies weren't loyal to Roddenberry's outlook, but c'mon; "have faith that the universe will unfold as it should," that's the entire spirit of Star Trek distilled to one sentence.
There's a plan in everything, kid. And I love it when a plan comes together!
1) TWOK: Well, doesn't need much explaining, does it? Just the quintessential Star Trek movie--over-the-top villain, space duel, and emotional ending. Also the movie that gave Trek a much-needed make-over and rejuvenated the series.
2) First Contact: May be a perfect Trek movie. It has everything--good special effects; a great, scary villain; a fun time travel plot; thought-provoking ideas and good drama. Picard's big "Moby Dick" scene is probably one of the best-acted scenes in the Star Trek canon. (Right after Spock's death.)
