Unpopular Opinions

(Sometimes you may not know what is unpopular: surprised at the amount of Brenda love and Kelly hate online!)

I'll start:

- Didn't like Brandon/Nikki. Felt like he was dating someone from middle school and it was a bit uncomfortable.

- Don't particularly like Claire.

- I don't mind Gina.

reply

I don't mind Gina either, but aside from that I think my opinions seem to be pretty much the majority.

reply

gina was a figure skating goddess! 

nat was the best chef in la!

I thought they could have done a better job with Gina's character and story lines but by then the whole show sucks so I'm not surprised. But I actually liked her and rooted for Gina because I always loved any character that would stick it to Kelly and Donna.

reply

I liked her, but hated the loser they made her be.

Staying with Dylan when it was clear he didn't care about her. Even hurting David (who did care) and going back to him.

Not ever letting anything good happen (like when she had the chance to skate, and passed out due to her bulimia, and when she lost her endorsement)

Even when she did something bad, having her be stupid about it (like when she used her own name to snitch on Mel to Jackie)

reply

Yes I agree and when she almost burnt down Donna clothing store.

I never cared for Janet didn't like her with Steve.

I like Celeste I think she would have fitted in with the gang and should have been apart of the cast.

reply

I agree about Janet. I also never liked Claire.

Also, though I never really liked Kelly, I got tired of Val always doing something to hurt her, even when Kelly was doing nothing to her. (Like when she read Kelly's journal, then told what she read. And tried to make that business deal with Kelly's father, just because she knew it would bother Kelly.) And then Brandon defending Val.

Or (on the subject of Val) how she was the one who went after Ray (yes, he should have resisted). Yet she came out of it as though she did no wrong.

reply

Yup I agree with everything you said about Val, I just watched the episode about Steve 21st birthday and she want to stop Kelly and Brandon from hooking up again. The girl just doesn't stop, I feel bad for Kelly here and there like you said Kelly doesn't bother her but Val keeping on putting her nose in Kelly business.

I agree about Ray, Ray really did nothing wrong he should have said "no" period to Val.

reply

And we can't forget about Val hooking up with Kenny Bannerman!

reply

I liked Celeste too.

reply

I always wondered why Celeste wasn't added as a regular.

reply

she probably got close...was certainly a nice gal'...it was so awful what a jerk Steve was, especially the first dating show night..

reply

i agree with all you said. although i did like him with nikki girlfriend-wise, i also agree with you that she was like a middle schooler. but what is worse -- her being like a middle schooler or her dating that diesel dude?

steve was awesome. shyeahhh!

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more. Edmund Blackadder.

I think sometimes people are too hard on both Claire and Kelly. I found a lot of their issues compelling and understood their actions at times.

reply

True enough.

I can't quite put my finger on why I'm not a Claire fan. It's just one of those things.

I've seen S1 - S4 quite a few times (she was introduced S4), but maybe when I rewatch S5 - S10 (only seen it once or twice) I'll have more perspective.

reply

I can't stand Claire because of the way she threw herself at Brandon when she met him. Like ease up! You can tell he's not that into you. I guess she got better when she settled down with David and Steve. But she was just one of those people who spoke her mind and sometimes you can't fault her for that.

Clare grew on me as the series went on. I thought she was funny and liked too that she was the heavy when she needed to be, especially when it came to Kelly’s coke habit. As for Kelly, I’ve always been a fan but definitely dislike her actions at times.

Good and valid points.

The college years was the most interesting compared to the high school and adult years.

A lot went on with the gang in college

- David experienced drugs for the first time
- David and Donna broke up
- Donna went through an abusive relationship
- Donna was almost raped
- New friends was added to the gang or somewhat added (Clare and Val)
- Kelly was hooked on drugs

and so much more.

I think Brandon was cute with actress Maia Campbell character, it was good to see Brandon in an interracial relationship even if it was for one episode.

reply

same here. big fan of the college years.

Claire? well..

her bubble-headed behavior trying to sleep with Brandon was not good, little Daddy Dean's daughter gets what she wants...even when she waterbombed those guys in the carpark and they came up and began beating people up and wrecking the apartmen, that was on her, and that I'm aware, she never faced justice over that.
Don't get me started on the great lingerie mix-up.

then there was her snooty behavior with army-jacket guy..if he really had have been the creep she dismissed him as, and had been dangerous, she would have been the first one to die in that Wes Craven movie.
Fair enough, almost every other stupid broad on that campus wound up owing him an apology..

then there was the humiliating way she blew Steve and his new motorcycle off, with the crack about 'sorry I'm not up to your biker-babe fantasies Steve".
I assume Steve returned the expensive motorcycle.

then, for her finale, there was her 'Mehh, you know what, fcku-you Steve, I'm off to the Sorbonne in Paris, it's been real but your services are no longer required by me, tootles!"

THAT, I'm pretty sure, was the real Claire coming all along.

In her defence, well, she was hot. Dry wit.
Likeable? hmmmm, hmmm....loveable? not in any way my idea of it.
That's some waspish bitch, right there.
What's with her eyebrows? Are they supposed to be like that, or she had help?

Here, here! That was definitely one of many ridiculous storylines. Why in the world would Clare suddenly be so uptight?

Then again, to be fair, I went through various phases during my youth as far as being more aggressive or passive when it came to romance, so as to figure out what I really liked and wanted.

Ironically regarding the middle school comment...

the actress playing Nikki, Dana Barron, was actually a year OLDER than Jason Priestley lol

reply

Really? I would have thought Jason was older than Nikki. She look like she was around Kelly and Shannon age.

reply

actually she was 3 years older, according to Wikipedia. Dana Barrons birth year is listed as 1966 and Jason Priestley's is listed as 1969... so she was 3 years older than him

reply

She was the original Audry from the Vacation movies.

- I actually like Kelly. She had a few moments where she bugged me, but for the most part I don't mind her.

- I hate everything about Clare. And she's insufferable the longer she's with Steve.

- Brenda really bothers me at times. I love the first years, but she had a bad habit of ping-ponging from one passion or cause to the next, with no follow-through. Rap line? Animal rights? Desperate for money to shop and then ridiculing her friends for always wanting to shop. I wish the writers had been more consistent with her character.

reply

- I can't stand David and Donna as a couple.

- Donna should have ended up with Cliff Yeager.

- David should have ended up with Valerie.

- I like the Steve/Carly pairing, and I wish Carly had stayed. I like the fact that his relationship with Carly made Steve more mature and responsible.

reply

Agreed. I think this was the first time Steve handled himself in a mature way. He was great with Carly's son!
