Why everybody hates The Simpsons now?

I think it's because they overstayed their welcome.
The quality has dropped, the competition is more modern or edgy, the characters and format have nothing else to say. Enough already.

But I know that they'll be missed when they're gone.

It's like fan fiction now.

You might be mixing up "hate" with criticism.

I'm a fan since the Tracy Ulman shorts. I watched the Simpsons grow from a simple cartoon to a tour de force of wit and biting satire. I've also watched it age into a feeble shadow of what it used to be.

I am critical of the later years Simpsons, but I don't hate it and I don't call for it to end. Nothing they do now will change the golden years for me.

reply

By hate I mean "feel annoyed or repulsed" instead of "interested or entertained", like I used to be.

It's that funny guy from school, who after 30 years is still repeating those same jokes and routines, trying hard to recapture being loved and popular.
What do you call your reaction to that?

reply

I would ignore the not-so-funny guy, but then, that's how I'm wired. Now, if I couldn't get away from that guy somehow then I would be both annoyed and repulsed, but neither reaches the level of hate.

Honestly, I simply don't care about later Simpsons. When channel surfing, I simply skip anything past season 13 or so. I don't hate the later episodes nor am I annoyed or repulsed by them - I just don't find them funny. Someone is apparently being entertained by them, it's just not me. Live and let live.

I've watched them from the beginning and I still laugh more heartily at this show than any other TV show or movie. End of judgement for a comedy show--no need to consider all those peripheral things like voice- actors or the "competition" (season opener drew 4.44 million, while "trendy"--though I'm not sure of that after 19 yrs--Family Guy had less than half that number). So your assessment that "everybody hates The Simpsons now" is way off. This message board trends conservative so you're going to get a lot of support for your off-kilter view here, but the fact remains that The Simpsons continues to rock on (the writing and creativity are still awsome!).

What do you mean, "Now?" The show has been routinely trashed since the end of the so-called "Golden Years." (Seasons 1-7, arguably including 8). People have been calling for it to be canceled since Season 11.

reply

It overstayed it's welcome to the extend that it has become hard to feel nostalgic for it. Had they cancelled after season 9 or 10 then it would have become a television legend with a successful reboot long ago. But nowadays it is almost a synonym for tv shows that few care about anymore and that desperately tries to become relevant again.

reply

Well said, my thoughts exactly. Whereas it could have gone down as a legendary TV show and one of the all time greatest, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of The Simpsons now is a show that went way past its best. It's kind of like Game of Thrones with season 8. All the good that was in the show comes second to the poor quality finish.

I don't know if anyone HATES The Simpsons - I think it's more of a reaction to what HAPPENED to the show. That's what people hate more than the show itself.

The show, as it is, isn't PARTICULARLY 'hateable' (if this is a word), but it's because it carries the name of a show that used to be BRILLIANT, it's like an insult and slap to the face simultaneously.

It's so obvious that what was once OOZING creativity and brilliance, is now as bland, safe and corporate waste of imagination as possible. Sterile, unfunny and scared to be edgy.

It's like a complete opposite of what it once was - it's the CHANGE that people hate, not the show itself. If it had always been like this, no one would hate anything, it would just go in one ear and out the other without leaving any residue of any kind.

It's because it's called 'The Simpsons', but it doesn't DELIVER 'The Simpsons', that makes people hate. What this show once delivered was tasty, unique, amazing, exciting and inspired.

What it offers now is bland, pre-packaged, perfect combination of different types of 'meh' with just the right proportions to not offend anyone and to be as tasteless, soulless, predictable, bland and unappealing as possible - it's like your gourmet meal was replaced with rotting porridge from some hobo's trashcan.

Just kidding, hobos don't own trashcans, but you get the idea.

It's because they allowed this show to lose everything that was good about it and still go on, instead of just killing it. It's like they're keeping some animal artificially on life support although it would naturally have died years ago - while everyone knows the animal isn't REALLY alive anymore anyway, it just appears that way because its organs are artificially animated and its body artificially respirated and such.

The song 'Let it go' must be something the networks never heard or understood..

Yes, I think your analysis is spot on.
They lost their edge and are now just a puppet corpse of their former self.

I wonder if, instead of calling it quits, they could reignite some life into it by signing better writers with new ideas.
But I doubt that'll ever happen, they have this stale brand now and cannot change it, it's like expecting wonderbread to become some tasty, fragrant loaf by changing the cooks.
It ain't gonna happen, we just take the same ole shit or leave it.

Hmmm…I find it interesting that when Futurama happened, Simpsons started to dip. I’m not sure how many writers crossed over to Futurama, but I think it was a few. And IMO, Futurama was a fantastically written show.

The Simpsons also had a thing about erasing well-known characters when their voice actors weren’t available anymore. Add that to edgier animated shows cropping up thru the years, and you have a Simpsons series that doesn’t feel as relevant anymore.

It’s weird, because I know the first 8 seasons like I know my face, but there’s definitely a moment in time with that series where there was a dramatic rift.

Like, I can still occasionally watch a recent episode of South Park and say it’s still funny/entertaining….while I’d struggle to say the same about The Simpsons.

However, I could still quote the hell out of the first decade of Simpsons material….and THAT shit still feels relevant to me. Futurama kidnapped me. It’s actually crazy that I haven’t given a fuck about the Simpsons in 20 years, but could still quote a decades worth of their material 😆
