This movie always used to bother me because of how the dub was. The lips never really matched, which seemed so strange because most other dubs are rather good at matching lip movements.
It wasn't until recently that I learned the reason why this was is because the director decided to go with the traditional American standard for animation. They record the vocals first so the animation can be matched to the audio track, rather than having the actors match their words to the pre-animated scenes.
So instead of having lazy and cheap animation that works better with dubbing because it typically uses one of two generic mouth animations you have complete animations that look more realistic and are harder to match with the new English track.
I really probably should watch it again in the original Japanese, but I've seen the movie so many damn times I really have no interest anymore.
Nope. It's the original English dub or nothing for me. That is what I grew up with and it's what seems right to me. I like the mispronounced names and the epic way it sounded when they yelled their names and the childs voice saying "Akira"
shareOnly version I've seen is the 2001 dub, have watched it a couple of times. Loved the movie.
shareI watch all my movies with the original sound track, strictly no dubs. However you will have to admit that a lot of content is lost in translation in most subtitles! I personally wouldn't, but I could see why someone would also watch this in the dubbed version because English and Japanese are two very different languages and chances are that you fail to interpret some of the paralinguistic messages correctly. These can often be better conceived in a dub.
sharei cant imagin myself watching a movie with dub *beep*
just watch it with subtitle..
the best
I've watched 'Akira' so many times and I don't even put the subtitles on anymore. I get to learn some Japanese that way, what would I get with dubbing? NOTHING!
I hate dubbing with a passion, I don't care if a film is spoken in MARTIAN, I'll always go for the subtitles, it's a matter of respecting the origin of the film.

Pioneer Dub is really good. Plus there's nostalgia for us who grew up watching Digimon. Watching dub's is fine, you don't have to be such a weeaboo. There are plenty of animes where the dub is superior. Berserk Tv show, DBZ for example.
shareToo many great visuals in Akira to be distracted by subtitles. I'm not convinced I'm missing anything from the Japanese audio with subtitles.
