This isn't masterpiece by any means, but by God it is a golden example of '80s trash films, specifically of the Cannon era. This film is simply fun with an awesome soundtrack.
Agreed I love this movie, it one of my all time faves! It's feel good, has a great soundftrack is totally original! I think that new movie Real Steel is actually a copy of this and Rocky combined.
Honestly how many other movies do you know about arm wrestling? It should score heaps of points on orginality alone.

I agree 100%. I still don't understand why critics are so negative towards this movie. I think this is one of Stallone's best. Sure, movies like Over the Top, Rocky 3 & 4, Rambo 2 & 3 might not win any Oscars for Acting or storyline but then again neither would Jaws, the Star Wars movies, Indiana Jones movies or the James Bond movies. But their box-office earnings speak for themselves. If adjusted for inflation, Rocky 4 is the highest grossing sports movie of all time.
The critics forget that at it's core, Hollywood is an ENTERTAINMENT industry. That is the big picture. People go to the theatre to be entertained, not learn about the real problems of the world (you can watch the news for that) nor to develop intellectual knowledge (there are libraries for that). If these things are included in the movie, that's fine but they shouldn't replace the core purpose of the movie which is to entertain.
We put posters of 80's action movies on our wall, not those of "Citizen Kane". We get pumped up watching Rocky training to fight Drago not Marlon Brando sitting behind a desk. Bottom line, don't listen to what movie critics say, make your own decisions.
I get what you mean so pardon the intrusion but your Brando line I believe refers to TGF? That is simply one of my favorite films of all time, and I may not have a Don Vito poster but a Michael Corleone is a pretty cool one. Especially one from TGF2 where Pacino sits alone in the dark, cross legged in a couch, dark stark black shadows all around him, right after Connie talks to him during their mother's funeral.

1) it is called over the top and is supposed to be about arm wrestling. there are probably less than 10 minutes of arm wrestling in the movie. Had it been called 'how I finally wised up and got my son back' and was marketed towards women and castrated men then maybe it would have a higher rating. Bottom line: this movie does NOT deliver what it promises. It only has the rating it does because of nostalgic pity points.
2) if anything about this movie is 'over the top' it is the kids bad acting. ack!
3) a good bad movie has to be entertaining. this just isnt. its a half an hour of story stretched to an hour and a half with boring dialog and redundant scenes.
so yes. really. i cant believe its that high.
