Why are they not remaking this?

It's perfect to remake. I know everyone will be upset, because remakes are lame, but if they did it right it would be great. does anyone agree?

NO, just NO. Not only does Hollywood have a serious shortage of male acting talent that could pull off what Hackman and Scheider did, but no way would they go for the deliberately gritty look and restrained action. It was a product of its time and should remain there. I can't think of a single director today who would do this film justice, maybe Christopher Nolan but I doubt he would touch a remake.

If you want to enjoy a more modern French Connection cop drama, watch The Shield and The Wire which are simply excellent shows.

That is hilarious! Justin Bieber IS Popeye Doyle!

No remake. they could NEVER recreate the real NYC of the 70s like all the "stolen" (Guerilla style) location shooting at the time could.

These days ou cant just shoot a hollywood movie with a hidden camera and use real people and locations without paying them and getting signed permission.

We've kinda lost something in that respect....

maybe have Friedken film ANOTHER of Popeyes adventures, surely a guy like had other stories that would make a good film- no?

The only reason to remake a film is if there is some way it could be improved, while capturing something of the original "magic". I can't see how this film (or most films for that matter) could be improved through doing a remake. I mean it won the Oscar that year!!

It's like the people that say they should remake Star Wars because the special effects could be improved. I think they are missing the point of the film itself.

Are you crazy? You can't remake a classic - there's nothing to improve. I hope they never ever ever get that idea.

How is this movie not up on 10 stars BTW?!

reply

I think you miss when remakes make sense.

1)If a movie is good and the idea is good - it's risky but it may be worth it
2)If the movie is bad but the idea behind it is good - it's 100% up for remake and should be done
3)If a movie is good but the idea behind it isn't very original - it makes NO sense to remake it.

So guess which one of the 3 French connection falls into?

I'm sure some people would love to see a remake. I am not one of them. Take a near perfect movie, update the lingo, update the music, concentrate on special effects, probably make jokes in it, and in the end you would have a giant piece of crap that would do nothing but insult people's intelligence. Certain movies should never, EVER be remade, and this is one of them. Can you imagine a remake of "The Godfather"?

No, definitely do not remake this film. Remember, remakes almost never have the same impact simply because 99 times out of a hundred remakes are only remade to make money, which is NEVER a reason to make a film. Look at all of the remakes of films that were great that have been made in just the past three years. Can you name one that was any good? Had the same impact as the original?

On the other side of the argument, I have to get used to the fact that moviegoers today are a lot dumber than they were years ago. So, an extremely stupid film can do great at the box office. Does that mean it's good? No. Look at how well the remake of "A Nightmare On Elm Street" did. It was crap, but it did relatively well. That's just an example of a remake that should not have happened. I can't believe they are remaking "Robocop". It, too, will be crap. But it will make money as stupid people will go see it and love it.

Footloose is another example. Red Dawn another.

On the other hand, original movies that were just plain awful have been remade and remade well. I have no problem with that. But, a movie that was fantastic before should never be remade for the cash, because it will suck. ALWAYS and ALL WAYS.

If your nose runs and your feet smell, you were built upside down.

No stick with that "remakes are lame" statement and leave it at that.
