Once Upon a Time in the West is far superior.

I saw both movies back in the 60's. I was not impressed with GB&U back then. I was mesmerized by OUATITW. I watched both movies recently and I felt GB&U was so contrived and ridiculous, where as OUATITW has held up quite well and stands the test of time. Even Clint Eastwood said GB&U was "bloated".

The scenery in GB&U and the sets however were fantastic.

I couldn't disagree more. This almost seems like a caricature to the earlier and vastly superior (in every way) The Good, The Bad and The ugly.

reply

A little superior I’d say.

reply

No, it is not.

I found it to be long and boring. No where close to the Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns.

Casting 3 huge superstars in Fonda, Bronson and Robards actually diminishes the authenticity when you think about it. None of those 3 men were regarded as Western actors, and still aren't today.

Contrasted with the stars of TGTBTU, all authentic Western legacies left in their wake, and were established western stars at the time.

reply

Nah. I've seen both tons of times, and I honestly get bored watching OUATITW now.

I watched OUATITW this past year for the first time. Not a fan. Just didn't connect with me and I found it irritating most of the time.

TGTBATU is my favorite western. The best of the Spaghetti Western trilogy (though I really like the other two as well).

I suppose the civil war battle portions of GB&W bugs me a bit, but not enough that I would bother to contrast it poorly with OUaT... which may be the better film... I suppose.

In every way Once Upon A Time In the West is superior, I agree. Sergio Leone's best western, best film, and possibly the best western ever made.
