Rashomon or Seven Samurai?
Rashomon - for me.
I find it strange that so many have 7 Samurai on top. I though they should be at least neck and neck. But no doubt, they are Kurosawa's best two.

Rashomon for me as well.
sharea combination of elements, first of all noir is my favorite type of film, and this is almost perfect noir. Mifune is one of my favorite actors and his performance in Nora Inu is (to me) his best. the sense of desperation and fear he provides us with is just so believable, and also seing him mature as both an officer and a human being are just flat out moving.

Rashomon for me.
1. Rashomon
2. Sanjuro
3. Throne of Blood
4. The Bad Sleep Well
5. Yojimbo
6. The Seven Samurai
7. Ikiru
And those are all I've seen. Hey! Don't be so harsh, man....I've only just gotten into Kurosawa.

Seven Samurai, as it is probably my favorite film of all time.
shareI really need to see more Kurosawa I've only seen two but I'm addicted
I'm not authorized for this argument however, as I've only seen Rashomon & Ran, of which I prefer Ran, though Toshiro Mifune kicks ass in Rashomon, the whole grandeur of Ran is better for me.
Seven Samurai, it's just perfect it's in combination of themes and ideas into one epic story. Rashomon is still a great film though.

Remember this: "Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same."

Rashomon is the more revolutionary film and has a more interesting idea and structure, but Seven Samurai takes a simple idea as far as it can go into perfection.
I have more fun and more of an emotional involvement watching Seven Samurai.
IMO Rashomon is a better film than Seven Samurai.
But overall "Ikiru" is my fav movie from Akira Kurosawa.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well I have others
Seven Samurai, its just flawless whereas Rashomon is a little tainty here and there, but still great :)

Of Kurosawa's must-see pictures I would go in the following order of preference:
-The Seven Samurai
-Ikiru
-Ran
-Rashomon
-Throne of Blood
Those five I would probably consider his best, my preference to each is not a judgment of quality, only of which ones I prefer over others. I simply love all of Kurosawa though, and have yet to view one I did not like.
I'd go with rashomon here but i actully have a bigger love for Yojimbo and Dersu Uzala even if they werent as 'good' better per say. Yojimbo since my personal fav. movie was based off it (fistful of dollars) and i just really digged the oringanlity of Dersu Uzala.

Rashomon is very good, but this is my order of Top 5 must-see Kurosawa films.
-Seven Samurai
-Ikiru
-Rashomon
-Ran
-Drunken Angel
I have to rewatch Throne of Blood again-didn't see all of it.
I was a little underwhelmed with Ran...but I'll have to watch that one again. Wasn't as good as I expected, but still very good all the same.
