Rashomon or Seven Samurai?

Rashomon - for me.

I find it strange that so many have 7 Samurai on top. I though they should be at least neck and neck. But no doubt, they are Kurosawa's best two.

Seven Samurai is great cinematic achievment and one of the very best movies ever (story, characters, scenes, humanism...).
Rashomon is also excellent. I also think Ran is Kurosawa's best with these two.

I second the lonely fellow that endorses Red Beard as his favorite.

I like 7 Samurai you get a lot of characters who are as good as Mifune at the time. Mifune is deffinately the most stand out character in this movie but you really get these other 6 characters who become the outline for all characters on a team in almost every movie since this. I really feel like these too films shouldn't be compared though. My view on Kurosawa has pretty much always been that he is the father of modern cinema, Rashomon is basically a suspense/psych thriller and 7 samurai is the blueprint for action adventure.

Rashomon- Basically from this movie we get the directing style of alfred hitchcock, the ever moving camera that creates the uneasyness in the audience was used by hitch on more than one occasion. side note: has anyone read the short story? I read it before seeing the movie, its actually called In a Grove by Ryunosuke Akutagawa i got it from a book of his short stories called Rashomon (which is a story about a wall) i was sort of unimpressed with the story anyone else have thoughts?

7 Samurai- Classic story of good vs evil + philosophy + true story + everything ever done after this movie was made. I love this movie, and i am somewhat biased because i like kurosawa's forging of what would become the modern western and being able to see how the east really made the west in movies.

my vote- 7 samurai

1. Sanjuro
2. 7 samurai
3. Yojimbo

Rashomon is better.

Hard to choose the better one. So, I'll go with a very important criteria for me.
Sometime, I watch a movie only cause was praised by others. And I wait for the final to catch the thing, and, usually, I remain only with a bitter taste. So, as long as bad.
7 Samurai, a pretty long film, made me regret the final is near, and, though I liked very much Rashomon, my vote goes to 7 Samurai.

I'd have to say Rashomon.

Sorry for bringing up an ended discussion.
I can't choose. Seven Samurai is a fantastic fairytale but Rashomon feels more accessible because it's a closer depiction of our behaviour today, 7S is more a history drama.

I guess I'd choose Rashomon because it speaks to me in a different way

I love both films, but Seven Samurai is my favourite.

I'd say Seven Samurai, though both are high up in my list of favourite Kurosawa films and films in general.

I felt the ending of rashomon was better, so my vote goes out to that. They are both excellent films, though.

SEVEN SAMURAI!!!!!!!!!!

Rashomon is a more rewarding experience - it's a deeper film that works on more levels. That said Seven Samurai is one of the best 'adventure' style films ever made and either is a top way to spend a couple of hours.
If I had to choose I'd watch Seven Samurai. Then I'd watch Rashomon ;)
