Rashomon or Seven Samurai?
Rashomon - for me.
I find it strange that so many have 7 Samurai on top. I though they should be at least neck and neck. But no doubt, they are Kurosawa's best two.

Seven Samurai
shareRashomon over Seven Samurai. Yojimbo over them both.
If I were an emoticon I'd probably be winking right now...
Seven Samurai
Res non Verba
Rashomon.
My favorite Kurosawa films are definetely Yojimbo and Sanjuro, though.

Seven Samurai is far better, I would rate Rashomon near the bottom of Kurosawa's Samurai movies, although being at the bottom of a Kurosawa list does not make it a bad movie.

I actually felt the ending was much more stronger in Seven Samurai than in Rashomon. Both endings try to bring out a revalation, but it's just better done in Seven Samurai. Whereas the ending in Rashomon is a 180 degree turn for the mood of the rest of the movie, the ending in 7S is somehoe biult towards throughout the movie...so Seven Samurai it is.
shareYea, I'm gonna go ahead and say Seven Samurai. The grandness and epic feel and pace of the film, in conjunction with the code of the Samurai and the honor and dignity of the Samurai all make it just a tad better than Rashomon.

Im about to see Rashomon but I have seen Ran and Seven Samurai and I have Kagemusha on DVD which im about to watch. I will have to Ran over Seven Samurai for the fact that it is in colour and widescreen, which allows Kurosawa to really show the beauty in his wide pans of the beautiful landscapes.
A little off topic but is anyone else here a big fan of Zhang Yimou;s Hero?
Just as I was writing I heard that it was similar to Rashomon anyway, the choice of location, colour and cinematography in that film were definitely second to none for me.
I think Hero is an excellent film. Hugely influenced by Rashomon as you will see

God bless Steven Patrick Morrisey
I agree. I prefer Rashomon over Seven Samurai. But Ran beats both of them..
shareI'll go for Seven Samurai but Ikiru remains my favorite.
shareThis is a tough question but I have to say Seven Samurai. Roshomon is a fantatsic, fantastic movie, definately a 4 star classic. But Seven Samurai is, in my opinion, possibly the greatest movie ever made. That's the great thing about kurosawa, he has so many movies that are considered all time greats it's hard to pick just one. Actually it's hard to narrow it down to just two. There's Seven Samurai and Roshomon, but there is also Ikiru, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, and many others that are all just amazing movies. But to answer your question, I'm saying Seven Samurai is the bettter of the two.

Hero used the Rashomon effect.
shareSeven Samurai for me, I enjoyed Rashomon, but not near as much as I loved Seven Samurai.
"The world will look up and shout "save us"... and I'll whisper, no"
Yes, that's the movie quote.
For me, Rashomon was an easier movie to watch with its shorter length and mystery. But, I can't honestly say it left the impression on me that Seven Samurai did. There was just a lot more that amazed me in the latter, so I'd probably "rate" it higher.
shareBoth films are excellent japanese classic movies but I liked more Rashômon.
Kurosawa is the best foreign director of all-time.
