Does anybody else think Gosling is the male version of a butterface?

The guy is ugly.

reply

Straight dude here and I find him to be very handsome. I know that attraction is subjective but to say that he’s a butterface as well as ugly, that seems to be a bit of a stretch imo.
That being said his profile pic is not the most flattering but so what, everyone one of us has shit photos.

reply

Maybe I went too far with "ugly". But he's not conventionally attractive.

reply

Somewhat.

I first saw Gosling in The Believer. What an amazing movie. And then that thing with Sandra Bullock where he was a killer and their personal relationship was interesting. He is kind of a blond Tyrone Power. I love The Nice Guys and think both Crowe and Gosling have chemistry. I would have loved to see a sequel; the only time a sequel wasn’t made. What a great sense of humor and what fun!! The Notebook was for my mother and she actually liked Rachel better. For me, he was the best thing in Barbie. I did like Drive and Blade Runner 2049. Lars and the Real Girl was really brave and innovative much like Barbie. A few years ago, when I was visiting LA, I walked into his restaurant and saw a bunch of female customers sitting alone waiting and I walked out. He was a carpenter apparently and therefore he was good with his hands. He partnered with the chef as owners. I like him SOOOO much better than Ryan Reynolds - a comparison is often made. Hey Onan, you look like you would like this guy, no?

reply

Ryan Reynolds? He's a little too Anglo for me. I like darker guys in general.

Yeah, The Believer is a good movie. Back in the day Gosling was looking for great roles. Now he's cashing in on Barbie. But I do hear Barbie is a really good film. Sort of surreal from the descriptions. I haven't seen Barbie yet but I'm I thinking David Lynch and Twin Peaks meets Disney. What do you think? Does Barbie have that depth as a film?

reply

You would not like Barbie. It doesn’t come close to David Lynch. That would have been great too. It’s more like Jacques Demy’s Young Girls of Rochefort. And in a strange way. Forrest Gump and Matrix. Forrest Gump in the way they take historical events and put it in the story with a timeline and Matrix for the two worlds. Reality and Barbieland. It’s a lot of hot pink. My least favorite color. But you can appreciate the writing. And the creation and it draws from other movies where people who are into film would recognize. And it’s all tongue in cheek. It’s a parody. Quite brilliant actually. But Ryan plays a guy who is overlooked, Ken. I like darker guys too generally. But this is not that kind of movie.

reply

Okay, so I was hoping for too much. Someone else online mentioned Lynch.

It still looks like something I'd enjoy though it sounds like more blockbuster hype than art.

And if it were just a dating film I'd give it hard pass. But the fantasy Barbie Land element sounds playful.

reply

David Lynch’s version would be dismemberment of Barbie. Dexter season 1. That doesn’t happen. Definitely not a dating movie. The art comes from the inception of the doll with the most imaginative story. It’s fun as hell. And it’s smart.

reply

Haha. No, Lynch is more subtle than that.

He's kind of the successor to Richard Gere. Not actually handsome, but a good actor, photogenic, well-built, very charming, well-dressed, and charismatic enough to always hold center screen. Women adored Gere back in the day, and now they adore Gosling.

Now a man doesn't have to be classically handsome to be considered very desirable by straight women, but they seem to think that a man who isn't classically handsome had better have a lot else going for him.

reply

Except I'd say Richard Gere was classically handsome.

reply

No he wasn't! He's an attractive overall, but had, and has, small eyes, a big nose, thin lips, and lacks the extreme jawline Hollywood likes to see on its leading men.

Classically handsome guy for comparison purposes included.

reply

Okay, we both know this is subjective. The second guy is standard WASP good looks, old school. Richard Gere was a little more offbeat. But he's definitely pretty, unlike Gosling.

reply

Gere was exceptional. Handsome. Great build. Wasn’t he a gymnast. The structure of his face was perfect. Hair perfect. Maybe not his features. But his bone structure was perfect. And he was/is cocky. Is sexy. He could play the solitary man role in American Gigolo (just as well as De Niro in Taxi Driver - part of the trilogy). Great bad guy in Internal Affairs. Should have been in Cruising. Remember Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Ironically, much later plays the other guy in Unfaithful and Olivier Martinez essentially plays an early Gere. I do think Gosling is very good looking and clean. He is very pretty and has flair.

reply

Gere ... (s)hould have been in Cruising.

Wow, that is a great observation. I hated that movie, "Cruising". And I just realized why. Al Pacino was ridiculously miscast as an undercover gay buttboy. Richard Gere would have been perfect for that role.

reply

Yeah. Friedkin wanted Gere. Gere wanted the role and Pacino came in and really championed himself. Friedkin later regretted it. He said Gere would have been better. Pacino has no appeal in this. The movie was already controversial. Pacino was poorly cast and had trouble with the character. Friedkin and Pacino supposedly had a lot of problems.

Friedkin recently passed away and they are now showing his films to full audiences. Sorcerer was the one that Friedkin said not casting McQueen was his biggest mistake. Even 40 yrs later. So, what would these two films be like. To have McQueen. And Gere. Because Friedkin was the master.

reply

That's interesting. I did not know that.

Well I'm gay and I've done my share of cruising. Lol.

But yeah. Pacino was too gritty for that film. Gere would have made it a better film.

reply

I know you’re gay. I was in a discussion with you about Ike Turner. And you had a bf who was black and liked heavy metal.

Pacino didn’t come across as gritty in this. Just clumsy. I also didn’t realize until recently that there was more than one killer?

reply

Well the gay is relevant because "cruising" is a gay thing. I mean I know teenagers use the term "cruising" for hijinks in their cars as well.

When I saw the movie I expected something to which I could relate. But I didn't. I don't think Pacino pulled it off. It would have been a different movie with Richard Gere.

reply

I can't stand this guy. Something about him is so off putting to me.
