Things America gave the world

The A-Bomb.

reply

Kowalski. The world still hasn't forgiven the USA for that one.

reply

That's okay. The world hasn't forgiven Canada for you either. 🀣

reply

That's true, but you didn't have to say it out loud like that.

Basketball
Rap music

reply

Basketball was invented by a Canadian.

reply

I suppose Canadians can count as "Americans" just like Mexicans and Argentinians...

Was baseball "invented" by Canadians?

https://www.cbc.ca/sportslongform/entry/how-canada-invented-american-football-baseball-basketball-and-hockey

"It turns out that the earliest, detailed, reputable account of baseball being played in North America came out of a game in Beachville, [Ontario], which is in the Woodstock-London neck of the woods. The date of record is June 4, 1838."

reply

I've never heard about Canada inventing baseball, but I suppose it wouldn't count if it's not the baseball we know today.

reply

I thought a Canadian invented basketball. James Naismith?

reply

Naismith invented basketball after he moved to Springfield Massachusettes, which is in America...

reply

If an American invented something while living in a different country, how would you classify that invention?

reply

I'd classify it by the country it came from.....I think.

reply

I honestly don't know. I think it would probably be whatever the person who invented the invention identified as. For me if I was living somewhere temporarily and invented something, I'd still probably think of it as my invention, not the country's where I am. That's just me though.

reply

I'm with you. The invention and the nationality both belong to the individual, not their location. That seems plainly obvious to me.

If Thomas Edison had invented the incandescent light bulb while living in the Algarve, I wouldn't consider it to be a Portuguese invention. And what happens if you someone comes up with an idea for a Flux Capacitor while they were mid-flight over the Atlantic? Is it an invention by the ocean or the airline company?

reply

Naismith was Canadian-American. He died at home in Lawrence Kansas from a brain hemorrhage...

reply

Fair enough. But it's still his nationality that's relevant rather than his location. You said 'after he'd moved' rather than 'after he'd become a citizen' or 'after he'd been naturalised' or whatever. Not that it matters that much. I don't think we need to fall out over it.

reply

This might be time for WWIII. Hahaha.

reply

It could turn into a major diplomatic incident. I'm waiting for 'oxygen' and 'puppies' and 'Everything!!! USA USA!!!!' to come up as American inventions.
