the last time you were pulled over by the cops?

2007 - rolled through a stop sign.

reply

My wedding night.
My sister had been rear ended at an intersection months before by a car disregarding the signal.
When I approached the same intersection with my new wife in the car, I slowed down. A police car pulled me over. They said slowing down there was an indication of possible drunk driving.
Since I don't drink, I knew that wasn't the case. They gave me a sobriety test which I passed with flying colors. And when I saw the look in the officer's face, I could tell that he knew I was stone sober. He let me go.
When we got to my wife's parents' house, we told the story. My father-in-law's response: "Do you realize the only sober person at that entire wedding is the only one who gets pulled over?"

reply

Your father-in-law is a hoot! I hope everyone had a good laugh.

reply

He was.

i am a not a big drinker and have pulled over a number of times usually around christmas with passengers. i always tell the cop that i am the only one sober. i get the wave on.

reply

About two years ago, routine Christmas road check for drink-drivers. Within about 30 seconds of talking to the guy he could tell I was obviously stone cold sober. He didn't even breathalyse me, just said I could go on my way.

A few years back I got pulled over for 56 in a 45 by a DOT cop while I was pulling a trailer that had 3 cars on it. I explained to the cop that I didn’t have any violations on my record, and I would appreciate a warning. The cop said he was about to retire and he’d never given a warning in his life. Damn tax collectors.

reply

That sucks man. I have gone my whole driving life by the rule of 10 over the limit max and have passed countless cops with nary a problem. I actually learned that rule in traffic school, back when you had to physically go to a classroom. At least I learned that one invaluable fact.

I read a book about how to avoid tickets written by a state trooper once, and it said their motto was “give ‘em 9, 10 their mine.”

I had a CDL at the time and you never want violations on your record, especially if you’re an owner operator. So, I went to court and it was my lucky day. The officer did not show.

reply

It’s entirely possible my speedometers were calibrated just a smidge in my favor or any number of factors.

And I have heard anecdotally that cops hate showing up to moving violation hearings, so if you can take the time, it might be worth your time to go. Have several CDL/Teamster friends fwiw.

such a smooth talker

Yeah, really. 😖

About a year ago I got pulled over twice the same night because one of my headlights was out.

My favorite DUI-related story happened 15 or so years ago. Was coming southbound on La Brea iirc, and there was a DUI checkpoint with a cop stopping each car at the Y junction, talking to the drivers for thirty seconds or so, likely the typical “had anything to drink tonight?” or some other method of generating sufficient PC to send them to the lane on the right for further DUI testing, or the lane on the left to freedom.

I had had a very long, stressful drink and drug-free day, was on my way home late, and was quite annoyed with this inconvenient violation of my rights. I pulled up to the decision-making cop and just looked square at him with a “c’mon, really?” deadpan expression, and he just waved me through without a word.

Even though I had nothing to worry about, I still chuckle about that every so often, calling it my “Jedi cop trick.”

reply

You were not the droid he was looking for.

reply

2019. Was carrying a fan i bought while riding my bicycle. Apparently I “ran a stop sign” according to the officer who looks like he can still be in middle school lol. Showed him my receipt and was sent on my way. Yeah I know I probably looked sus but cops should have better things to do with their time.

reply

Advance screening of Aquaman. Routine drunk driving stop check.

reply

so what happened?

reply

Nothing. Asked if we'd been drinking, nope, sent us on our merry way.

We have random check stops during December. I have to give them credit though, I didn't see him and he had us diverted into a building approach way in a second.

reply

Kind of a mundane story.

I was speeding near a small town. I was caught. The officer was professional and wrote me a ticket, which I paid.
