What are you snacking on?

It's Jerky Y'all...Plant based jerky

I recently went 50% vegetarian. The two biggest surprises, Plant based jerky, and Bologna are pretty good, and close to the original.

reply

What's next, meat based lettuce?

reply

Come on bologna and jerky, dried up and mystery meat. Is plant based really going to be that different.

reply

I don't trust any food based on something. It ain't right.

reply

Well we can't all live on Bacon:)

reply

Bite your tongue! It’s a fundamental food group!

reply

You should get that checked out.

When I first went vegetarian I tried a lot of new grains, I found out that I really like Quinua and made Chia Seed pudding. I realized that you can pop other things than popcorn for a snack, sorgum, buckwheat and pearl barley were good. I tried a lot of new salad dressings and found some new ones that I LOVE. I bought weird fruits at the supermarket, there is a lot of fun things to try.

reply

what is it made of?

reply

Most of the stuff I've been getting is from soybeans.

reply

it's all about the carbs.

reply

I'm trying to cut down on saturated fat. I was eating a lot of meat. It was time for a change.

reply

A gourmet cheese shop opened up near me and I love it.

reply

Wensleydale's ?

reply

The varieties are seemingly endless.

reply

That’s in Notlob, I believe?

reply

There's nothing better as an appetizer than a cheese, nut, and fruit plate.

reply

At the cheese shop I bought some Spanish almonds--called Marcona almonds--never had them before and they are super delicious!

reply

I don't care how fucking runny it is!

reply

I'm feeling a bit peckish.

reply

For some cheesy combustibles?

reply

TGI Fridays Chili Cheese Crinkle Fries; great with beer and for some fire in the belly but I'm sure it might wreak some havoc with my acid reflux later tonight. I came prepared, have plenty of skim milk in the fridge to neutralize it.😁

reply

Since I'm trying to go a little vegetarian, I'm loving potato skins with cheese, sour cream and green onion. Maybe a tiny sprinkle of bacon.

reply

I recently discovered cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches.

reply

I like cream cheese and celery, so I'm thinking I would almost certainly like it on cucumbers as well.

reply

It's a great, refreshing snack. I like celery and it seems like a logical combo, so I'm going to try that next.

reply

I spread cream cheese directly on a celery stalk. Does a cream cheese and cucumber sandwich have any other ingredient, such as a cracker?

reply

I actually learned of that sandwich from a movie. Tried it and loved it immediately. Originally, it's supposed to be served on white bread with the crust trimmed off but I've had no problem with it on wheat bread.

reply

ok, thanks

reply

Ah, I got "Bac'n Bits" for that, they're the old "Bac-o-Bits" renamed to appeal to today's vegetarian consumer.

They're a cheap and tolerably effective bacon substitute, although when I want a slice of something crispy and salty with breakfast, I fry up a bit of haloumi cheese. But that's not exactly cheap.

reply

Gaviscon is your best bet to combat acid reflux.

reply

I beg to differ. I hate Big Pharma. My go to remedies are either two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily, swigging skim milk or a teaspoonful of mustard when symptoms start to manifest; all are very effective and natural.

reply

Lately I've been dipping celery and carrot sticks along with some veggie potstickers into some spicy hummus. It's delicious!

reply

Mellow Mushroom pizza.

reply

Kefir at the moment, because I'm sick, but before that the two awesome new snacks I discovered are:

1: Crispy apple chips! I don't know how they're made, they're apple slices that are either freeze-dried or dehydrated, and taste like super-crunchy crisple apple slices.

2: Dal Chaat! Found these at the local supermarket, they're an Indian-style snack, a combo of crisply spicy chickpea crunchies, and crispy spicy baked lentils.

All vegetarian, and the apple chips at least are widely available. Trader Joe's has them.

reply

they're basically dried apple slices. they make them from beetroots, too.

oh, and get better soon!

reply

Thanks, and I will spare you the contagious kisses if you spare me the crunchy beet chips!

Bets always have that dirtlike undertaste, no matter what you do to them.

reply

That's true, and you love it or hate it!
I've been told that fermenting them takes away the earthy undertaste, so I tried but to no avail.

reply

Pickling definitely doesn't do it, and I've had pickled beets made by the best cook I know, someone who can make vegetables I don't like downright delicious!

Fermenting sounds like far too much trouble. I mean, as long as there are other things to eat in the world, why go to the trouble of fermenting beets?

reply

Dutch cheese from Gouda. My wife brought back enough to feed an army when we went on holiday there recently.
