I never watch old movies. Can you recommend one movie from 50s-60s that could get me going?

A few things to remember. I don't like sci-fi movies like star wars. And I do not like Slapstick comedy like that of Charlie Chaplin. And I do not like Musicals. Everything else is okay .

Vertigo (1958)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966).
BOTH films are in my personal top 5 very favorite films EVER and absolutely 10/10 perfect.

reply

"Elmer Gantry" has to be the best movie about religion.

"A Face in the Crowd" (1957) is also very good, similar theme.

reply

Yes, one of my favorites. "Ace in the Hole" with Kirk Douglas is similar... the influence of media, but how it's corrupted by financial bias, greed/ego

I can't think of many movies from the '50s or '60s that I like all that much. I liked 12 Angry Men (1957) but I doubt I'll ever watch it again. True Grit (1969) is easily my favorite movie from that time period, and one of my all-time favorite movies in general. Psycho (1960) and Night of the Living Dead (1968) were pretty good. Nothing else comes to mind.

Movies from that time period, especially the '50s (and older) seem weird to me. The acting usually isn't very realistic, and even the biggest ones had janky special effects, like blatantly obvious matte paintings for backgrounds and driving scenes done in a studio in front of a projector screen. The Foley work is usually pretty bad too, and ~completely lacking in bass, as is the score. There's no good excuse for any of those things. Apparently cheapness/laziness with regard to production values was just more acceptable back then.

I don’t have many favorites from the 50s but this is some I really like from the 60s. The best spaghetti westerns are from the mid to late 60s so many from that genre are on this list.

Django (1966)
Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill (1965)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
The Great Silence (1968)
The Mercenary (1968)
Night of the living Dead (1968)
Cleopatra (1963)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Death Rides a Horse (1967)
Dark of the Sun (1968)
Witchfinder General (1968)
Black Sunday (1960)
Face to Face (1967)
Nightmare Castle (1965)
Le Samourai (1967)
Blood and Black Lace (1964)
Repulsion (1965)
The Guns of Navarone (1961)
Paranoiac (1963)
Carnival of Souls (1962)

THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? https://youtu.be/qsKQiVJkEvI -- it's my #3 all-time

A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE - https://youtu.be/5AIchOH1cQU - in my Top 10, and I think its the greatest performance in a movie. Some consider his movies too dark, too domestic, too slow, but when I first saw "Minnie and Moskowitz" I was frustrated, because I thought I knew my "indies", but I didn't know shit at 17, but by the end, I felt .. amazing, and it's also on YouTube, and was made a few yrs before. I think its funny. Cassavetes put his mother in the movies, and she's the funniest person I've ever seen in movies. And so Scorsese (who got his first job) did the same thing, but i don't think he's half as good as John.

MIKEY AND NICKY - https://youtu.be/ztGLuzbCGzA - mobster movie, but its mostly in real-time, full of great acting, writing, humor, and tragedy of course.

Here's a really great new channel
