Favourite Satire films

I really enjoy a good satire, and they come in every genre. Some of my favourites include

Robocop & Starship Troopers
Wag the Dog
Man Bites Dog
Life of Brian
Drop Dead Gorgeous
American Psycho
Singing in the Rain

I debated on putting some Kubrick on here, and while he has some really popular satires, they just aren't my cup of tea.

JoJo Rabbit
The Hunt

Both movies poked great fun at people with far too deeply-held ideologies and bullheaded nincompoops in general.

reply

I still haven't seen Jojo Rabbit, but I really enjoyed The Hunt.

reply

I hope you give JoJo a go, its really quite funny with many terrific performances by a good cast.

reply

I want to see it. There are just so many movies on too many platforms. I will get around to it though.

reply

Reported for "nincompoop" usage.

reply

I’ve had about enough of your shenanigans.

reply

"Shenanigans" was the name of my high school floor hockey team.

reply

That’s a Great name for a hockey team👍

Did you ever see Slap Shot (77) or Goon (11)

Both are great hockey movies. They remind me of that old comedy line, ‘I was watching a street fight and a hockey game broke out!’
😄

reply

I've seen both and Goon 2. I want to watch Miracle (2004) though.

reply

I have Goon 2: Last Of The Enforcers in my cue, I may watch it soon. Funny, I just always call this actor ‘Stifler’ and everybody knows who I’m talking about😄

Miracle was a really good sports underdog story.

reply

Look at you watching all those hockey movies, you Canadian wannabe.

reply

Spaceballs, Hot Shots

I can go all night like a lumberjack. Topper- what about your landlady? You can do her too.

reply

This may be less of a satire than the ones on your list, but "American Beauty" is one of my favourite films.

reply

I would list it as a satire.

reply

Frank Drebin is #1. 😀

reply

King of Spoofire.

reply

Wow, I just described the scene where Drebin was having a shootout with a crook and they were about three feet from each other behind tin garbage cans LOL!
I’m showing my Boy all of the classics on his summer break;).

The Naked Gun movies are every bit as funny as Airplane!

Sexy lady up on a ladder…
‘Nice beaver.’
‘Thank you, I just had it stuffed.’

*hands Drebin a taxidermy Beaver

It’s all so stupid yet brilliant comedy!

reply

Oh yeah. There are so many moments that are just perfect comedy. Even the 2nd and 3rd ones are great.

The truman show and american pyscho are considered satires?

reply

Can't speak to American Psycho, but The Truman Show does have satirical elements. One thing is a satire of reality shows. Google 'the truman show satire' quite a few essays about this.

reply

They are both satires. American Psycho satirizes the entire yuppy culture. The whole business card scene is wonderful satire. The Truman Show is a satire of American reality tv.

reply

I've just never heard anyone call the truman show a satire, but I can believe it. I did know that american pyscho mocks yuppy culture. Never seen american psycho, but I've watched the truman show lots of times. I do see it as a commentary on many different things and satire itself IS a type of commentary. I actually never decided what I thought the main theme of The Truman Show is, but it would be whatever the creators of the film say it is.

reply

I agree that there is a difference between a film that is in itself a satire, and a film that has satirical elements.

reply

How can you satirize something that hasn't happened yet?

The Truman Show was released in 1998. Most of what we think of as "American reality TV" started the following decade.

reply

The Real World was out!

reply

Well, Network is a satire of the merge of hard news with ratings & entertainment, which mostly came after 1976.

reply

Reality tv started in the 40s with Candid Camera. An American Family was on in the 70s. While reality tv wasn't what we think of today, it was still around, and still presented as "real" even though there were product placements, and producers.

reply

Lost in America is a hidden gem.
