Do you think if recreational drugs and alcohol were non-existant, the world would be a better place?

Pretend that regular medicine still exists but no one abuses prescription drugs, drinking alcohol and "get high" drugs simply do not exist. What would happen?

People would have their wits about them at all times.

They would be forced to deal with the problems they have in their lives, instead of climbing into a bottle or rolling a joint.

Maybe people would watch more movies or play videogames to escape life instead? Will there always be escapism that will be abused?

*I had to edit, to be clear that regular medicines still exist in this hypothetical question*

*Edit: Added more thoughts on users"

If its pills: Some people moderate themselves, but I have known many people in my life to overdose on pills and I dont think they all commited suicide. Some just took stuff they werent prescribed and that kind of user has no side effect warnings or dosage warnings to read like if they were prescribed them by a doctor. And they dont know for sure the pills they bought are the real deal either.

If its weed: Out of dozens of people I've known and interacted with. Chronic weed smokers have no ambition and dont have forward momentum in their lives. The plant has many uses and positives, but people get wayyy too lazy and uncreative when they do the stuff. If you're smoking pot everyday you may have a problem. That being written, only a very rare handful of people I knew smoked pot only sometimes and they kept their ambition and moved forward into successful lives. But like I said it was rare from my point of view.

The world would sure as hell be a physically healthier place!

Every single substance that people use to get high recreationally can harm them, most can kill you in the short term or long term. That definitely includes alcohol, which is legal, you can die of alcohol poisoning or alcoholism, or drunk driving.

reply

Do you feel weed can kill in the long or short term?

Same question for LSD.

reply

LSD can definitely cause strange and random mental/cognitive problems, which is why I've never tried it, even though it sounds like I might like it. And while the old stories about people jumping off buildings while tripping because they thought they could fly, the old hippies I know said that back when they tried it, they were told to *never* take it alone, so even the hippies were worried about the physical safety of people who'd induced an irrational state of mind.

Let's see, ecstacy can cause seizures, cocaine can induce heart attacks, meth can cause heart failure and strokes, and yes, you CAN overdose on marijuana! It's been happening more since legalization in my state, people show up in ERs with psychotic symptoms and heart issues. I don't know that anyone's died of marijuana alone, but too much can do you harm.

So to get back to the original question, I have no idea at all whether society is better off for letting people escape their troubles with alcohol and drugs. Certainly the alcohol and drugs do a lot of harm, but for all I know if people had to face reality, there'd be a mass casualty shooting on every block.

reply

just cause ur a pussy and freak out on an edible doesnt mean u overdosed on marijuana. all those drugs even the hardcore ones like coke and meth are way less toxic than the shit the government allows into our food supply

reply

With a rise in higher violence and inability to cope, with no get high drugs to hide within, it would forward the progress in dealing with the direct causes of all this stress in life. So violence and shootings could occur but I think real solutions would be worked on and a greater sense of community could arise from it.

No. I have had bad times on alcohol and weed, though...

I don't understand the hesitancy of LSD, but not a blink before drinking alcohol. I actually know someone who snorted cocaine (who knows what's in it), but was afraid of LSD.

I've done LSD plenty of times. It's so therapeutic, and I've never had a bad time. Also keep in mind, people have "bad trips" when they're completely sober. The last time I took LSD was because I was very depressed, and it completely un-depressed me, made me appreciate life, got rid of my anxiety. I remember going outside, and things that would bother me (dogs barking) wasn't so bad. I enjoyed the sunset - things we take for granted.. I also saw things from different perspectives. If you were to call me on the phone (like my mom did), you wouldn't notice I was "high". It felt like all the "wires" in my head suddenly connected. I was on AOL, and my memory was working so great, although you're so in the moment, I remember diminished short-term memory.. I'm glad I've kept notebooks of my trips, and it's cool how it's like taking a microscope to receive a lot of self-awareness. For example, something is bothering you, but it can be hard to identify the if/then or cause/effect, but under the influence, it seemed like things that were lodged way back in my subconscious came to the forefront, and had a great level of understanding.. Even the next day or week, there's a more positive outlook, and less worrying. I also noticed my discipline for meditation was better, for a few days at least... A decade ago, I meditated for quite a while, and felt like I was under the influence of shrooms.

To answer the OP, I think there could be a lot of problems without some kind of emotional release. If there's a guy with insomnia, he has to suffer, and others around him will probably suffer. Sometimes people go through shit and need ... something to help them sleep. The last time I went to a GNC-like store, I asked about this thing called "Calm-U-Nat" and there was a HUGE section of what seemed like hundreds of sleep aids. I know some of it is because of technology, but people have had insomnia and all those problems since the beginning of time. Drugs could also enhance sexual experiences. There's some men who need Viagra. During times of stress, some people can chill out thanks to a glass of wine, or a number of things.

I do think stimulants can be harmful. As opposed to calling into work, guys on two hours of sleep will just drink a bunch of coffee, which might not be helpful. Obviously shit like cocaine has no positive contributions to society. Meth, and many other substances.

i was doing cocaine when i was 18 but never touched lsd until i was 19 or 20. my mom died when i was 16 and i was too scared i would have a bad trip. lsd is stronger drug mentally than coke to prepare for. coke is nastier and dirtier drug but less scary to someone who has a bad mindset

exactly

LSD can go badly wrong . Cocaine not so much

No, no one would be getting laid.

That’s what I was thinking.

I'd find a way.

I think video games are more harmful than a plant like marihuana. I answered down below, but people might be more dangerous without something that can get rid of their temporary anger, insomnia, nervousness, paranoia... Someone else pointed out sex.. Viagra is a drug. Without it, some marriages would be screwed up, with no physiological release, and as a result, perhaps violence to others (or to one's self).

But, if it was never around, who knows... An interesting sub-question would be how society would be if suddenly everything just suddenly disappeared. Alcoholics would actually die from withdrawals.

But overall, I'd probably agree that things would be less fucked up. Good thread, and the more people answer, the better. There's always many angles and ways to look at things, even hypothetically.

I appreciate a lot of the responses here as well.

Really anything that can sap your creative mind and ambition can be dangerous in large doses. If you are working a dead end job but on your time off you play videogames the entire time...your social life suffers (the REAL one in where living breathing people are close to you) and your professional life will stagnant since you arent taking any time to train yourself or move yourself forward.

Of course Television as well. I've had to purposefully shut it off or I will spend all day in front of the TV

reply

I think working the dead end job is more detrimental than video games, considering a full-time job is 40 hours/week.. But I'd add, who says a "real social life" is necessary? People seem to have adjusted to isolation before, but a handful of people I know who are friendly have told me, "I've been socially distancing for years!"... Had this pandemic happened in the 80s, I think people might not be able to handle it, but nowadays most of our communication is NOT face-to-face. I'm one who prefers having people over because it's just more fun, but even that is because I can jam with some, show them something physical, have sex, etc... If 90% of people choose not to be social, then even the 10% of extroverts won't have much of a choice and will find new ways, or will just do things they did more often (Movies, music, reading, etc).

I've talked more on the phone in the last couple of years because of the pandemic, and the people I used to hang out with, an arm's length away, are saying they just realized they prefer to be alone. I've actually had a couple of really long conversations in the last few days and a few things I heard were how instead all the driving, getting ready, finding a babysitter, we can do the same exact on the phone. As well as how one isn't going to catch COVID simply by talking on the phone. I have a friend who would come over, but we'd have music on, and talking over it took a toll on my vocal chords. For me, it depends on who it is. There's a girl who might give me a call sometime soon, but I can't have sex on the phone, so it makes sense, although I'm unsure because of spreading.... whatever.. Sometimes I think I (and others) might feel a way that second when you just happen to be on the phone with someone, and then days later, you think, "I wish she doesn't call". I'm on the fence, but part of me wishes to just get it out of the way.

reply

Probably. But there always seems to be something to take the place of something that is removed.

Perhaps it would in health terms. But the people who abuse alcohol and drugs would still be miserable without them and the people who can use alcohol and drugs responsibly would be deprived of them. I think the world would be better off without tobacco though. I don't think anyone who has quit smoking for a year has anything good to say about it.

reply

But without them, those miserable people would have to work out there issues and find some way to live their life. I was an alcoholic at one point and it was a choice brought on from severe depression. If I didnt climb into a bottle I wouldve been forced to find a way to live with it and overcome it like I have been now!

The tobacco thing is spot on! I would go ahead and lump heroin, meth, bath salts in as completely worthless to our society as well.

reply

Yes you are right of course but some people for whatever reason are unable to overcome their problems.

reply

No. I find things more tolerable when high and I have less anger and more forgiveness.

reply

But do you remain high all the time or every day? Or do you use it when you are really in need of quelling the negativity bubbling up? Remaining high every day hurts you as a person.

If its too personal I understand. I added more to the edit within my original post.

reply

I used to. Now I just mainly do it at night or after work to unwind.
