SORRY...I CAME AND THEN FELL ASLEEP...LOVE YOU.💖

reply

The offensive term "wog" actually came from the initials for Western Oriental Gentleman. Not a lot of people know that.

reply

Wikipedia would disagree - but I did learn a new word checking that - backronym: is an acronym formed from an already existing word

The origin of the term [WOG] is unclear. It was first noted by lexicographer F.C. Bowen in 1929, in his Sea Slang: a dictionary of the old-timers’ expressions and epithets, where he defines wogs as "lower class Babu shipping clerks on the Indian coast." Many dictionaries say "wog" probably derives from the golliwog, a blackface minstrel doll character from a children's book, The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg by Florence Kate Upton, published in 1895; or from pollywog, a dialect term for tadpole that is used in maritime circles to indicate someone who has not crossed the equator.

Suggestions that the word is an acronym for "wily Oriental gentleman", "working on government service", or similar, are examples of false etymology or backronyms.

reply

Sounds like woketard revisionist history to stick it to the racist white man.

reply

I suspect not. But you'd have to find a proper library with sets of old dictionaries to determine that.

reply

It is well-known now that very few words actually come from an acronym.

reply

FYI "niggardly" is not a racist term, it means "cheap", "stingy", or "miserly".

reply

Oh boy 🥤🍿

reply

Oriental is racist?!!! 😳

reply

I’ve heard Americans take offence at the term.

reply

It is considered non-PC, but I wonder how many people realize it's just the antonym of occident?
